Try a Quiet Bird Drawing Session: Shape, Space and One Small Change

GlebNatureStudio

A bird drawing can begin with a circle, a small triangle and one long line. You do not need to identify a species or make a realistic picture to try this exercise. Start on plain paper with a pencil, then change one thing and see what happens.

1. Make three shapes do the work

Draw an oval for the body and a smaller circle for the head. Connect them with one short curve. Add a tiny triangle where you want the beak to point. Leave the first marks light enough to change.

Try a second version beside it. Make the body taller, the head smaller or the beak point a different way. Which change makes the gesture easiest for you to read? There is no required answer.

2. Give the bird somewhere to pause

Draw a branch from one long line and two forks. Place the bird on a fork, beside it or above it. Add feet only if you want them. Keep one open patch around the outline so the bird remains easy to notice.

Now look at the empty shapes between the bird and branch. Choose one gap and draw just its outline on another part of the page. An empty space can be a useful shape too.

3. Choose one small change

  1. Change the angle of the head. Does the bird seem to notice something new?
  2. Add three leaves, then move them to a different part of the branch.
  3. Draw a moon or sun in two different positions. Choose the placement you prefer.

Use one of these invitations, or invent your own. If the page begins to feel busy, leave the next area unmarked. You can stop after a few marks; finishing every prompt is optional.

4. Keep one observation

Write a word, add a symbol or tell a partner about one detail you changed. You might name a curve, a gap or a direction. Compare the two drawings without giving them a score. Someone who prefers not to write can point or draw another small mark instead.
