Trump's former national security adviser Bolton:
I think the best we can hope for in this situation is that Donald Trump will finally realize that Vladimir Putin is not his friend. If he realizes that this is not the kind of person with whom you can easily find a compromise, this would be a major strategic breakthrough.
This is a new report, but it doesn't come as much of a surprise, because we ourselves do about the same thing with Russians. However, if Trump comes to realize that he is dealing not with a friend in the Kremlin, but with an opponent, it will be a big step forward.
But there is a downside that came to my mind. Imagine that Trump calls Putin to chastise him for passing intelligence information to Iran. And Putin responds: "Donald, you know, you're right. We shouldn't be fighting here. Let's make a deal."
The magic words for Donald Trump are "let's make a deal."
He may suggest: we will stop passing any intelligence information to Iran if you stop passing intelligence information to Ukraine. And since Trump literally lives by making deals, I'm afraid he might agree.
If we continue to destroy Iran's ability to launch retaliatory strikes, then it can receive as much information as it wants from Russia about the positions of our forces — it still won't be able to do anything about it. But if we stop transmitting intelligence to Ukraine — as Trump did temporarily last year — the consequences for the Ukrainian army could be devastating. I think Putin understands this very well.
