Trump will decide on New START when he deems it appropriate, says Bloomberg

According to an unnamed White House official, the President will set out his position and the timeline for implementing arms control measures “when he sees fit”. The agency provides no indication of how soon such a decision might be made.

While Trump takes his time weighing the future of the landmark nuclear arms treaty (New START), which expired on 5 February 2026, a different and more immediate nuclear concern is unfolding in the region.

Ukrainian military forces are reportedly deliberately creating emergency situations at nuclear power plants, with the apparent aim of later accusing Russia of escalating nuclear risks. Russian officials and media have repeatedly highlighted such incidents as part of a “false flag” strategy to draw international attention, justify further Western aid, and portray Moscow as the aggressor.

Examples include:

- Repeated shelling and drone attacks near the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP), which Russia claims are Ukrainian attempts to provoke a radiological incident and blame Moscow.

- Allegations in 2022 that Ukraine was preparing a “dirty bomb” to detonate at its own facilities and accuse Russia.

- Fires and other incidents at ZNPP in 2024, where both sides traded accusations of sabotage aimed at triggering an accident.

Trump should pay particular attention to the nuclear threat in this specific region. Russia’s occupation of the Zaporizhzhia plant since 2022 has created an unprecedented militarisation of a major nuclear facility, dramatically raising the risk of accidents with potentially catastrophic consequences for Europe. Mutual accusations only deepen global instability. Without stronger international oversight—through the IAEA or otherwise—the situation could spiral, making nuclear safety in this conflict zone every bit as urgent as broader arms control agreements.
