Season 3 of True Detective recaptured the mood, vision and most importantly the writing of the amazing of season 1. This time Mahershala Ali and Stephen Dorff are investigating the disappearance of two children. The first thing that stands out is the imagery. In the first season for instance there were all these shots of rural Louisiana with the oil industry looming in the background. This time there are great views of Ali. For instance he looks at a photograph of soldiers from Vietnam wondering if they have PTSD and then stares at himself because he’s concerned he might have it too. One time when he’s older he finds himself standing at an intersection involving the case and can’t remember how he got there or what he was doing. Second there’s a looming sense of doom and darkness hanging over the story. In the initial series there was a growing sense of evil. Here you immediately feel that something really bad has happened. Third the story once again is character driven. Ali has always been a favorite of mine and he doesn’t disappoint here. It’s all the little things like how he flirts with Ejogo and is able to get her phone number while passing it off as police business. He also constantly loses himself staring off into the distance because this case had such an effect upon him. He feels the importance of it all which makes you feel the same way. The show is really about Ali as much as it is the case it weaves through his life from the time of the case into when he was older and was still obsessed with it.

We don't have HBO, but, they give it 'free' every so often. More than a few years ago, the weekend we had it for free kept advertising for "True Detective", with the OGs, MM & WH. I just saw the first ep and knew I'd be buying the whole series!!! So, when season 2 was finally coming out, we had the free HBO & I watched initial ep, season 2. I liked it fairly well (again, bought the whole season). I know it didn't get great reviews. Then, FINALLY! season 3 (above)...I don't which adjectives to use first! I purposefully did NOT watch the final episode, which would have tied up so much. I STILL haven't, though I do have it out, and have re-watched episodes 1 & 2. I've heard a little about season 4; I'll buy it. I love that Woody & Matthew have remained Executive Producers; I believe they're still very much invested in what is THEIR series!

Season 3 of True Detective is a very different kind of story from Seasons 1 and 2. Although people have been saying it's very close to Season 1, I disagree. While the environment, setting, and bureaucracy is similar to Season 1, you have to understand it's still a state police department in the South from the past. Not much is different about that kind of environment, so it makes sense the tones and cinematography are comparable to Season 1. But that's where the similarities end. Minor Spoilers Ahead: The story is quite different, and the focus of this season is memory. Human beings remember and misremember events of their lives, and that can come to define a person. I thought the frame of the story from the perspective of a man losing his memory was effective and quite a departure from Seasons 1 and 2. There really is no antihero here. These are just cops, and they're okay. Not superstars or geniuses, just guys doing a job. And that's what makes this season more realistic as a cop drama. The conspiracy is also quite different from Seasons 1 and 2 with no real (I'll avoid ultimate spoilers here) evil at the end. There are bad people, sure, but it's not the level of true evil we saw in Season 1 or even the corruptibility of the villains in Season 2. I was surprised by the unveiling of the crime, it wasn't what I expected, and I think that's a good thing. They had to do something different for this season, strike a different chord, and I believe the show succeeded. The very ending of the story is quite good, encompassing the entire frame of the season revolving a man losing his mind. It's poignant and real, and I was pleasantly surprised by that kind of semi-tragic ending. Overall, I thought it as a good season and better than Season 2. Season 1 will still be the white whale any further seasons attempt to recreate, but maybe it can't be. This is still good television and much better than any cop drama out there.

I love this particular season. Let me just make clear, im not of the "first season was the best, forget the rest." Crew. I enjoyed the first season, and it definately hooked me as a fan, but it had its flaws. In my opinion it had great character development , and an intriguing story that eventually led, really to no place. The second season gets all kinds of not deserved negativity for not being season one. Frankly, I think it holds up really well, and at the same time , has some deserved criticism. Now, let's talk about three. I think they hit the nail on the head with this one. Fantastic storytelling, fantastic acting. The story itself is so full of nuances , and subtleties. This is pretty much television at its extreme best. It pulls no punches. Although you root for the detectives , there are no real heroes here, and im not sure any of the characters are all that likable in any sense. Except maybe the kids , and Wayne's love interest. Everyone has some dirt.. Let me just end by saying, this is my favorite season so far. As some have mentioned, it can be slow at times, but when it hits, it hits hard. Incredible show. Incredible season.

Firstly, the picture quality, the Blu-ray transfer is solid all the way through. Secondly, the sound quality is solidly subdued and let’s it loose at the precise moments… Thirdly, as the third and more than likely the last in the series I believe it comes in a close second in over all story and performances, if I’m honest as of today I enjoyed it more than the first in the series…T><> Lastly, the Blu-ray is a bargain on Amazon and the season is a solid Blu-ray for sound and picture quality as well as having a solid story and amazing performances by its 2 leading characters…T><>
