Trotzdem vervielfachten sich die Reihen der Kaufleute. Die Hoffnung auf große Gewinne, die Möglichkeit, reich zu werden, Länder in Übersee zu sehen, zwang sie, Schwierigkeiten zu vernachlässigen, zog unternehmungslustige und spielende Menschen, Abenteurer in den Handel. In den Augen der Zeitgenossen nahm der Kaufmann jedoch nicht sofort einen würdigen Platz ein. Wie jeder Stadtbewohner fiel er zunächst aus dem traditionellen Schema der feudalen Gesellschaft heraus, die in "diejenigen, die beten" (Geistliche und Mönche), "diejenigen, die kämpfen" (Ritter) und "diejenigen, die das Land pflügen" unterteilt war. (Bauern). Allmählich forderte das wirkliche Leben seinen Tribut. Entwicklung zusammen mit den Städten am Ende des dreizehnten Jahrhunderts. Die Handelsklasse erreichte ihren Höhepunkt. Von Profitgier, dem Wunsch nach Kapitalvermehrung gepackt, wurden Kaufleute oft zu Wucherern, d.h. geliehenes Geld gegen Zinsen. Obwohl die katholische Kirche im XII Jahrhundert. verbot den Christen offiziell Wucher, dieses Phänomen war im Mittelalter weit verbreitet und wurde zur Ursache öffentlicher Unzufriedenheit mit Kaufleuten. Geldverleiher sind beliebte Charaktere der mittelalterlichen urbanen Folklore. In einer der deutschen Großstadtgeschichten (dem sogenannten Schwank) trägt sogar der Teufel den verstorbenen Wucherer nicht zur Hölle, sondern packt ihn zimperlich an den Beinen und wirft ihn in den Abgrund. In vielen Shvankas wird die Habgier der Kaufleute streng gegeißelt und bestraft. In einer berühmten Geschichte kann ein Kaufmann nicht ruhig ertragen, dass er die Diener ernähren und Vorräte für sie ausgeben muss. Der „Leidende“ gibt vor, tot zu sein, in der Hoffnung, dass die Diener aus Trauer nichts nehmen können. Als die Berechnung nicht gerechtfertigt war, "erwacht der Kaufmann zum Leben", aber die Diener, die den Auferstandenen für einen Dämon halten, töten ihn.

Viele große Kaufleute wurden Steuerpächter. Sie zahlten einen bestimmten Geldbetrag an den Staat, der immer Geld brauchte, und erhielten dafür (eingelöst) das Recht, Steuern von der Bevölkerung in die eigene Tasche zu treiben. Dank des Durchsetzungsvermögens des Kaufmanns war er nie leer und das für die Landwirtschaft ausgegebene Geld wurde hundertfach zurückerstattet.
Nicht malen die mittelalterlichen Kaufleute und "Hobbys" Geldspekulationen. Händler überall versuchten, die Unvollkommenheit der Technik der Geldprägung auszunutzen. Da die Münzen mit einem Hammer abgeschlagen wurden, dessen Schläge ungleich stark waren, stellten sich die Kanten der Münzen als ungleich heraus. Zudem variierte auch der Goldanteil in Münzlegierungen. Geschickte Kaufleute sortierten die Münzen nach Gewicht: Die leichtesten wurden in Umlauf gebracht, die schwereren aufbewahrt, um sie zu mahlen oder mit Königswasser zu behandeln. Das so gewonnene Gold wurde zu Barren eingeschmolzen und angeeignet.
Kaufleute wurden auf ehrliche und nicht sehr ehrliche Weise reich. Auf der Blütezeit des Mittelalters stellten sie bereits eine bedeutende gesellschaftliche Kraft dar. Wohlhabende Kaufleute, die im Fernhandel zu Land oder zur See tätig waren, bildeten die Basis des Patriziats der Städte (siehe Art. "Burger" und "Werkstatt"). Der Kaufmann versuchte, sein Geld in Grundstücke und Gebäude zu investieren und sich so vor dem völligen Ruin zu schützen, falls ein weiteres Handelsgeschäft scheiterte.
Zum Leidwesen der Patrizierkaufleute garantierte der Reichtum in einer feudalen Gesellschaft noch nicht das Ansehen, das eine adelige Geburt verlieh. Auf der Suche nach maximalem Luxus begannen Kaufleute, Steinhäuser und sogar Paläste zu bauen, Innenräume mit besonderem Chic auszustatten, sich der Jagd und anderen ritterlichen Unterhaltungen hinzugeben und in der Raffinesse der Kostüme miteinander zu konkurrieren. 1462 verbot der Rat der Stadt Augsburg dem Patrizier und Kaufmann Ulrich Deydrich als Strafe für die Verschwendung von Stadtgeld das Tragen von Zobel, Marder, Samt und Edelsteinen. Es war schwer, seinen Stolz noch mehr zu verletzen.
Der Einfluss großer Kaufleute wuchs. Die Erfolgreichsten von ihnen begannen, sich der großen Politik anzuschließen. Dabei erwies sich die im Handel entwickelte Denkweise als äußerst nützlich.
