Tristan Thompson Suspended 25 Games for Violating NBA’s Anti-Drug Policy

Los Angeles, CA – April 11, 2025 – Cleveland Cavaliers center Tristan Thompson has been suspended for 25 games without pay after testing positive for banned substances, the NBA announced today.

The league confirmed that Thompson violated its anti-drug program by testing positive for ibutamoren and SARM LGD-4033, two performance-enhancing drugs. The suspension is effective immediately, meaning Thompson will miss nearly a third of the upcoming season.

In a statement, the NBA said, 'The suspension is consistent with the collective bargaining agreement and the NBA/NBPA anti-drug program.'

Thompson, 34, rejoined the Cavaliers last season in a bench role, providing veteran leadership and frontcourt depth. The four-time NBA champion—who won titles with the Cavs (2016) and later as a role player with the Los Angeles Lakers and Golden State Warriors—has faced multiple controversies off the court, including paternity lawsuits and past suspensions.

The Cavaliers organization issued a brief response: 'We are disappointed by the news and will support Tristan during this time. Our focus remains on preparing for the season.'

Thompson’s suspension comes at a critical time for Cleveland, which is looking to compete in a stacked Eastern Conference. With his absence, the team may rely more on young big men Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen.

Thompson, who will be eligible to return in December, has not yet publicly commented on the suspension.
