Several of these forms are then used to create a site specific installation. The installation will adapt and integrate into the natural characteristics of the surrounding terrain. My focus is the metalwork. Each metal frame acts a unique mold that dictates the shape of the glass bubble. When these forms are made, the glass is very hot and liquid as it pushes through the space between the metal rods. These pod-like sculptures capture and freeze that moment that the glass bubble is liquid. For that reason, I find that people are drawn into wanting to touch the glass. When running a hand over the bubble, one can easily imagine the liquid state of the glass. The glass orbs are then welded to a vine-like stem. The glass bubble with stem is then installed standing or hanging. Sometimes I will hang the glass bubbles from a tree or even a highway overpass. Or, they can stand erect like a six foot tulip, mounted to a concrete base. I try to integrate the base into the natural environment. I will submerge the base beneath the water or fit it into the contours of a hillside. The stem length ranges from a few feet to about 20 feet. The diameter of the glass bubbles varies around 18 inches. The glass is blown very thick, so it remains durable when installed outside. I strive to smoothly integrate the glass pods and stems into the natural contours of the landscape. For the color and pattern of the glass I will use colors that will directly interact with the surrounding environment, like playing into the color of blooming flowers. I will fit the installation to accent the key characteristics of the garden. When winter comes and most of the plants are dead, the colored glass orbs sprouting out of the snow will remind you of the vitality and beauty of spring.
