Comuna Trifesti este atestata documentar din anul 1772, cand apartinea Ocolului Tuna. Supusa periodic impartirilor administrativ-teritoriale, comuna s-a numit: Hermeziu intre anii 1871-1889, 1892-1928, 1939-1945, 1940-1945, Trifestii lui Paun sau Lesitii din Trifesti Intre anii 1803-1871; Trifestii din plasa Turia, intre anii 1932-1939.
