This goes out to all players on here, new and old. I don't care if I get criticism or not, but my opinion stands, you're an asshole if you have a trap camp.
Surprise for me today... I'm level 365, and I just ran into my first encounter at a trap camp... I go to a guys vendors to see what guns he has for sale, only to hear the sounds of me gaining radiation at a very high rate. I get out of the vendor, and turn around, only to find out that the door behind me has been closed, and locked.. However, because of my full health build and "What rads?" legendary perk, the attempt to kill me with radiation failed since I had enough time to leave the game.
There is no good reason to trap camp, the only reason is being an asshole.
If it's obviously like a trap camp like a maze challenge, whatever. If it's intended to grief an unsuspecting player, then yeah I agree.
The thing I find most funny is that people just can't admit that they're being a total arsehole for building a trap camp.
It's fine. The game allows you to do so. Just own that you're an arsehole for having a trap camp. It's simple.
I'd be fine with trap CAMPs if we were also allowed to break them without becoming wanted. Or if the players using them became wanted after a kill. I feel its only fair as its PvP.
Exactly, there should be some risk to the camp owner for operating a trap camp, it’s only fair that if someone wants to play as a raider they should have the full experience.
Used to be, but with the removal of PvP you lost the ability to escape very well done traps without dashboarding.
So you want to step on a punji, flag the other guy for pvp and level their camp? How about walking into the blast radius of a missile turret shooting a molerat?
I don't mind them. If I get killed in one I just laugh, come back to check out how it was done and explosive bait the F out of the place.
Still haven't run into one of these camps. Considering scrap is literally fucking everywhere in abundance in this game it's pretty damn pointless to kill players for a handful of random shit you could find down the road.
I don’t have first and most of my stash is full of gear and no room for junk, so I have to take the risk of rolling around with lots of junk on my player. Last time I got hit by a trap camp I lost out on a probably 2-300 aluminum, 5-600 screws, 150 ballistic fibre at least 1000 lead I don’t even wanna know how much other stuff, all in all it was about 75lbs of assorted junk. I know the only person to blame is myself, but it still stings, I’d rather have fallen into a fissure sight and lost it all that way.
My base has a powered garage door with a pressure sensor that turns on power and opens the door and then when you get off the door shuts. I have one on each side so you can easily get in and out. I’ve even got a big red arrow pointing to them so when players visit they can see how to get in.
I’ve never seen one player use it, they either have marsupial and jump the wall or just leave. I can only assume that it’s because players have been taught that they think it’s a trap base and pressure plates = bad.
I don't care how innocent your camp is - if I'm not sure how I'll get out, I'm not going in.
I once found one near Vault 76 that had something like "Noob Motel" in neon letters near the entrance. Signs claimed there was a vendor with free items but it really lead you to a long drop with punji traps at the bottom.
Weird, I actually search for them! I appreciate the creativity and the thought/planning people put into it. I stash junk before CAMP hopping. It’s just a game 🙃
I have the same attitude. Don’t keep junk on you. But I also marvel at the ingenuity and engineering of them. I do think that simply blueprinting flamer or Punji stacks however requires no skill. Lol But proper camps like the stuff Kazamati builds are brilliant.
Because most of them have no creativity and just abuse the same exploit they picked up on youtube. For every person like in the OP that builds a complex radiation trap you have dozens that just cram stacks of punji boards up against a wall and let their oversized hitbox insta kill anyone that walks past.
I agree! There is a difference between someone who stacks punji boards or removes a floor so you fall to death and someone who has a bit of creativity. There's a YouTuber called aswiftkickinythejunk and his traps are just funny!
So my camp isn't exactly a trap camp.... unless you visit the shelter and get unnecessarily curious what I'm hiding being a locked fireplace door and decide to clip through it. Then you dead. I don't think I've actually killed anyone but I built it anyways cause I got bored lol.
I've been building trap camps since just after beta and how people generally view them is not only going to change from person-to-person but also depends on the nature of the camp and the builder. My experience has been that the majority of people will enjoy them (or at least not be angry about them) if:
The trap itself has an element of humour or game to it
The general view of trap camps has shifted a lot in the community over the last year or so, something I believe is owed mostly to the proliferation of "punji camps". It used to be back in the day that a trap camp was something novel you would encounter out in the wasteland and that designing one that could actually kill someone was a technical challenge that few could muster and were very expensive to manage.
Punji camps in modern times are a much easier low hanging fruit style of trapping that has a high success rate, is often instantaneous, extremely cheap to build and has no element of sport to it. I think Bethesda realizes the nature of these and that's why they've tried to patch them at least 3 or 4 times (with limited success). Punji camps have become 95% of trap camps and people wieldling them do so more out of maliciousness or a means to an end of stealing junk. Inventive and humourous trap camps have all but become a lost style of building in wake of punji boards.
The serious issue with trap camps right now as I see it is not that they exist but that they aren't well managed. Punji camps should not exist at all. People should not drop junk in a camp radius. Killing someone with a camp object should initialize pvp and the victim should be able to damage your camp as soon as you damage them. Removing trap camps as a whole removes an entire style of contraption building and the potential for gamified and inventive player interactions.
I’m recently found my 11th encounter with a trap base. Most are generally obvious but some are very sneaky. That’s why I’m wary of vendors in awkward tight locations with no windows. Also putting junk away before visiting a vendor reduces any risk.
