Transsexuals make up a small but significant part of the alterative lifestyle demographic. Yet there exists higher-than-normal rates for drug and alcohol addiction within this community. Getting treatment for addiction means transsexuals will also have to address issues of their sexual identity and how they impact the individual’s decision making concerning drugs and alcohol.
Transgender individuals are born into a body that feels strange to them. They may have the appearance of a man or a woman, but inside they feel as if they are a member of the opposite sex. As you can imagine, this can cause a great deal of pain and confusion. Many will self-medicate using illicit drugs or alcohol as a means of escaping the depression and anxiety they feel on a daily basis.
By the time a transsexual individual finds her way to a rehab program, they likely have a full-blown dual diagnosis. Dual diagnosis patients are those who suffer from co-occurring mental health and addiction conditions. They are high-risk patients who are always at risk for suicide or other self-harm behavior.
It takes a special kind of facility to treat dual diagnosis transsexual patients. The treatment center must provide a comprehensive approach to recovery – having both addiction treatment teams and psychiatric professionals on staff. These teams work together to treat every aspect of the individual’s condition in detail.
While a certain percentage of transsexual drug and alcohol counseling is no different that that found in mainstream programs, there are a number of unique elements that help these individuals live more fulfilling lives. In particular, it is important for the therapist who will conduct the psychological drug treatment and counseling to understand the core reasons behind the individual’s drug and alcohol use. If these behaviors are tied to stress or depression from being a transsexual then these issues will need to be addressed during therapy. Many times, there may be a past instance of physical or sexual abuse that leads the individual to drug use. Once these issues are uncovered and discussed, the transsexual will be in a much better position to address their dependency.
While there are currently a number of programs that specifically treat the GLBT community around the United States, the majority of these facilities can be found in and around major urban centers with a large gay population, including: Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Miami and New York City.
Choosing a treatment center that fits your needs and enables you to achieve recovery success is no easy task. Rehab and treatment facility profiles on TheGoodDrugsGuide.com can help guide you through one of the most important decisions of your life.

Health concerns for transgender people
Mayo Clinic offers appointments in Arizona, Florida and Minnesota and at Mayo Clinic Health System locations.
Know the important health issues transgender people face, and get tips for taking charge of your health.
Transgender people can have unique health care needs. Here's help understanding these concerns and how to address them.
"Transgender" is an umbrella term used to capture the spectrum of gender identity and gender-expression diversity. Gender identity is the internal sense of being male, female, neither or both. Gender expression — often an extension of gender identity — involves the expression of a person's gender identity through social roles, appearance and behaviors.
Many health concerns that transgender people face are due to minority stress, which is characterized by:
For example, minority stress is linked to transgender people seeking out less preventive care and screenings than that of cisgender people of similar ages, whose gender identity and expression match the sex they were assigned at birth. This might be due to a lack of gender-related insurance coverage, being refused care, difficulty finding a doctor with expertise in transgender care or fear of discrimination in a health care setting.
In addition, because of minority stress, transgender people are at risk of:
If you're a transgender person, don't avoid seeing a doctor out of fear of a negative encounter. Instead, look for a doctor who is empathetic and respectful of your specific needs. By doing so, your doctor can help identify ways to reduce your risk of health concerns, as well as identify medical conditions and refer you to specialists when necessary.
To find a doctor with transgender expertise, check the website for the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) or GLMA.
Once you're talking to your doctor, be honest. Share your gender identity. Tell your doctor about any medicines you take or have taken, any surgeries or procedures you've had, and any associated complications or concerns. Talk about any stress, discrimination, anxiety or depression you're experiencing and how you cope. Also, tell your doctor if you're sexually active. The more your doctor knows about your health history, the better the doctor will be able to help you.
Experts recommend that you take steps to protect your health based on your anatomy, regardless of your gender identity or expression. This might include:
Additional issues might need to be considered if you have had feminizing or masculinizing hormone therapy or surgery.
Your health is important — regardless of your gender identity or gender expression. If you're due for a screening or you have health concerns, don't put off seeing a doctor. Early diagnosis and treatment help promote long-term health.

[ Update from the author, 3/23/2021: This piece contains many errors, including the following: It misgenders the letter writer, incorrectly refers to gender confirmation surgery as "sexual reassignment surgery," uses inaccurate definitions and terminology, quotes slurs used against trans women, cites problematic sources, and is stigmatizing in its approach. The author deeply regrets and apologizes for this piece.]
I'm gender queer and was told by a friend that the porn shop she worked in carried a wide selection of magazines and films catering to an interest in transwomen. That sort of implies it's popular enough to support that much material on it -- which is really interesting when you think of the way many straight males react to any other "male" behaving in a "female" way. I really wouldn't be surprised to find out the guys who try to bash me are secretly turned on by my existence -- although, I'd prefer they just send flowers or something. Is this becoming a more common attraction?
Seriously, FTD.com! It isn't that hard. Sure, flowers cost more and won't last as long as self-hatred, but th...
