Most transwomen will begin their gender confirmation journey with hormone (estrogen) therapy and supportive counseling. In addition to these two vital components, many transwomen opt to undergo surgery to complete their transition process. In fact, the American Medical Association considers gender transition surgery to be medically necessary, and transwomen who undergo these procedures enjoy a number of benefits, including decreased gender dysphoria, improved mental health, enhanced self-image and self-esteem, greater comfort with one’s body, increased ability to blend into society as a woman, and an enhanced quality of life. At the International Center for Transgender Care(ICTC), we offer a full suite of surgical services to assist you in your transition journey.
Facial feminization surgery (FFS) refers to a suite of procedures that can be performed to lend a softer, more feminine appearance to the facial features. Because the face offers important visual cues as to one’s gender, FFS is a vitally important component of the male-to-female transition. Each patient who undergoes FFS will have unique needs and desires, so the surgeons at ICTC will work with you to design a customized surgical plan. In general, FFS can include brow lift with bossing, scalp advancement, nose reshaping, blepharoplasty, tracheal shave, cheek implants, lip lift, lip and cheek implants, cheek softening, and face/neck lift. Read more on facial feminization surgery .
Many transwomen associate a full, round breast with beauty and femininity. While hormone therapy typically results in the growth of some breast tissue, patients who desire a larger bust may opt for breast augmentation. At ICTC, our surgeons are highly skilled and experienced in performing breast augmentation. Depending on your individual needs and anatomy, breast augmentation can be performed either over (sub-glandular placement) or under (sub-muscular placement) the chest wall muscle. We also offer both saline and silicone implants. Breast augmentation is a very common and safe procedure, and your surgeon will work with you to ensure a beautiful, aesthetically-pleasing result. Read more on breast augmentation.
Body feminization surgery (BFS) is an ideal option for the transwoman who would like to achieve a traditionally feminine, “hourglass” figure. A round buttocks and a low waist-to-hip ratio are defining characteristics of the female form—BFS targets these areas to create a streamlined, shapely contour. Typically, BFS includes trunk liposuction and buttocks augmentation. During trunk liposuction, fat is removed from the waist, abdomen, “love handles” and mid/lower back. This fat can then be transferred to the buttocks area to form a shapely, feminine backside—a procedure known as the “Brazilian butt lift”. Both trunk liposuction and buttocks augmentation are very safe procedures, particularly when performed by the expert surgeons at ICTC. Read more on body feminization surgery.
As the final step in her transition journey, a transwoman may elect to undergo gender confirmation surgery (GCS). Also known as genital reconstruction surgery, this step typically includes several procedures performed at once. During a process called “penile inversion”, the penis is turned inside out to form the inner walls of the vagina. The head of the penis is then used to create a clitoris. Outer and inner labia are formed, and the urethra is shortened and repositioned. GCS will result in fully-functioning external female genitalia that allow sexual penetration, orgasm, and urination. At ICTC, we follow the WPATH guidelines for transgender care. Because GCS is considered a major surgery, it is essential to select a knowledgeable and skilled surgeon. Read more on GCS surgery.
