Supergirl ‘s newest superhero has arrived, and she’s here to fight more than just the bad guys.
As the first transgender superhero, actress Nicole Maines , who portrays Dreamer on the CW show, wants to break the mold of trans characters on television.
“What I’m really excited for is to see the evolution of trans characters and see more diverse stories be told, so that every time we’re on screen we’re not really playing the part of educator and having to explain the experience to the audience, because it will have already been normalized,” Maines, 21, tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue. “Then a trans character is free to portray whatever kind of arc fits their character.”
Maines’ own journey began at a young age, when she noticed differences between herself and her identical twin brother, Jonas.
“Growing up with him, I could see him identifying with all of our boy toys and everything and he would be really comfortable in his skin and in his gender,” the Maine native recalls. “And at the same time, I wasn’t. I thought it was the most natural thing in the world, so I went up to my parents at 3, 4 years old and I asked them when I would get to be a girl because I just expected that I would be.”
With her parents’ support, Maines began transitioning. “I had been on puberty suppressants and hormone suppressants, so I did not go through male puberty,” she says. “And watching Jonas get his voice got deeper, his features became more masculine and defined, that was really surreal. It was like, dodged a bullet, Nicole!”

Maines had acting dreams in middle school, but thought she should come up with a more practical career plan. So she decided to attend the University of Maine in pursuit of becoming a video game designer.
Still, she still hoped acting would work out.
“I studied digital arts and graphic design, and then at the same time I was studying, I was still doing auditions,” Maines says. “It was really a matter of whatever comes first, but I’m so happy it was acting!”
The newcomer landed her Supergirl role after sending in an audition tape she made in her Maine home. And then the world found out about her joining the Supergirl cast at San Diego Comic-Con in July.
“Walking on stage, that was just one of the biggest rooms of people I’ve ever been in, and that they were all cheering and clapping for a trans superhero, for a trans actor, and that was so special for me,” Maines says. “It’s not that long ago that the reaction to that announcement would have been very, very different.”
She also felt a great responsibility to live up to the hype. “You want to do it right,” Maines says. “You want to meet and exceed expectations. You don’t want to just be a diversity hire. You want to be a valued addition to the cast.”
Now as Dreamer — whose day job consists of serving as Kara Danvers’ ( Melissa Benoist ) mentee at CatCo Worldwide Media — fans are seeing her storyline come to life. “I was really, really relieved to see how well people received her,” Maines says.
Being part of the DC Comics universe, Maines even has her own real-life super power dream.
“If I had a super power, I’d want to be able to fly just so I could float around my apartment,” she says. “Or I’d really like telekinesis because then you’d be able to slam the door on somebody.”

The CW's Supergirl casts Nicole Maines as Nia Nal aka. Dreamer as a series regular in season 4; she becomes TV's first transgender superhero.
The CW's Supergirl casts Nicole Maines as Nia Nal aka. Dreamer as a series regular in season 4; she becomes TV's first transgender superhero. Supergirl originally started out as a television series on CBS, but after the show's first season didn't garner the ratings the network wanted, it moved over to The CW for season 2. Since then, Supergirl has become more immersed in the Arrowverse - though it takes place on a different Earth in the multiverse - while still maintaining what worked about the female-lead superhero series from the start. Supergirl wrapped up its third season earlier this year and will return for season 4 later this year, rejoining Arrow , The Flash , Legends of Tomorrow and Black Lightning .
The CW's lineup of superhero shows has become a beacon of inclusivity among superhero media, with Legends of Tomorrow featuring an ensemble cast of men and women from all walks of life - including live-action media's first Muslim superhero with Zari Tomaz (Tala Ashe) . Meanwhile, Black Lightning features the first black lesbian superhero in Anissa Pierce (China Ann McClain), as well as a family of black superheroes lead by Jefferson Pierce (Cress Williams). Further, in season 2 of Supergirl , the show featured Kara Danvers' (Melissa Benoist) foster sister Alex (Chyler Leigh) come out and start dating a woman. Now, Supergirl is also making history by introducing TV's first transgender superhero .
As announced at the Comic-Con panel for Supergirl , actress Nicole Maines joins the series in season 4 as Nia Nal aka. Dreamer. The character of Nia is described as "a soulful young transgender woman with a fierce drive to protect others." Her season 4 arc will see Nia evolve into the superhero known as Dreamer, which will run parallel to Kara's own journey to find her way back to Supergirl following the events of season 3.
The character name of Nia Nal will likely sound familiar to fans of the DC Comics, since there is a Nura Nal who was introduced in 1964, making her debut in Adventure Comics #317. Nura is the superhero known as Dream Girl (who at one point in the '90s, goes by the name Dreamer), a member of the Legion of Super-Heroes. Nura Nal comes from the planet Naltor, and possesses a precognitive ability by seeing visions of the future through her dreams. It seems Nia Nal will be a spin on this character from the comics, but it's unclear how much of Nura Nal's origin will be adapted to Supergirl . The show hasn't shied away from introducing various alien species, and Nia may be an refugee on Earth like many other characters on the show.
As for Maines, her name may be familiar to some for her involvement in the 2013 Doe v. Clency landmark case in which the Maine Supreme Court ruled that it's unlawful for a school to deny transgender students from using the bathroom of their gender. Further, the actress has appeared in the USA's Royal Pains , while Maines herself was featured in the HBO documentary The Trans List .
Considering Supergirl saw the departure of a number of cast members at the end of season 3 as the Legion of Super-Heroes returned to the future , the show will undoubtedly benefit from a new series regular. Since Nia's arc will be tied to Kara's, it's sure to be instrumental to the upcoming season 4, though it's unclear whether she'll have her own connections to the Legion (there are still members of that team viewers didn't meet, after all). For now, fans will have to wait and see what Maines' character brings to Supergirl when the show returns later this year .

While superhero movies are hardly bastions of queer representation, Marvel and DC Comics feature a surprising number of LGBTQ superheroes—including some A-list characters. We’ve put together this list to introduce some of the most influential gay superheroes, ranging from groundbreaking figures like Marvel’s Northstar to characters like Harley Quinn who only came out in the past few years.
Diana of Themyscira has a long and storied history as a queer icon. Creator William Moulton Marston was heavily inspired by his wife Elizabeth and their polyamorous partner Olive Byrne. The early Wonder Woman comics were rife with sapphic subtext.
Although Wonder Woman’s main love interests are men, there are decades-worth of hints about her love life in the all-female Amazon society. In the past few years, these hints evolved into outright statements, with several Wonder Woman comics creators confirming that she’s canonically bisexual .
Possibly the best-known gay superhero in comic book circles, Midnighter was created as a parody of Batman , starting off in the adult-rated Wildstorm comic Stormwatch . When Wildstorm became an imprint of DC, he officially joined the DC universe. This created a rather unexpected overlap with the character who inspired him. In recent years, he has even teamed up with Batman’s sidekick Nightwing.
Armed with the ability to predict combat moves in advance, Midnighter is a hyper-violent action hero with no compunctions about killing his enemies. While recent comics portray him as a solo character, he started off as a member of the Authority team, which is led by his husband Apollo —a blond Superman analog.
Yep, the Merc with a Mouth is pansexual. He has expressed an interest in women and men throughout the comics (including a very obvious crush on Spider-Man ). Writer Gerry Duggan once described him as “ ready and willing to do anything with a pulse .” Perhaps not the most sensitive way to characterize pansexuality, but definitely in-character for Deadpool specifically. In recent years, Deadpool has attracted a new audience among queer superhero fans. Many fans hope the movie franchise will be more sincere in its depiction of his sexuality.
America Chavez, aka Miss America, debuted in the 2011 miniseries Vengeance but only gained her cult following after a subsequent makeover and reappearance in New Avengers . She’s a super-strong badass with the
