Not that kind ok f tranny.
4 speed 87 sporty. Lower end is making all sorts of sounds in 2nd & 3rd gear. Mountain riding super hot day. I managed the last 50 miles with lots of coasting and dropping it into 4th and making it work. Sounds like it's. A bit of a screetch. Any help I'm in the mountains so I'll have to limp into town for any parts or fluids. I have oil and tools.

I dont think that you should limp it any where. Take it apart and repair it before you limp until it is no longer repairable.

Is there oil in it??

Primary chain adjusted properly?

I am worried about seizure and case damage...Good Luck!

What park are you in?

If it squalls in specific gears that would indicate a tranny teardown and repair.

That's not a field fix for most people. If you've never done it it's not a field fix for you. How many miles are you away from home?

"Oops, tranny went bye-bye, now how do I get this POS back to the house so I can get on with life?"

If it locks up at speed you can crash and die, or it can blow the back of the transmission case out in classic Sportster fashion. You can't save yourself from a locked transmission by using the clutch, by the way.

Can you rent a truck in town and get it home that way?

You could post in the Chop Cult Travel Assistance thread and see if someone is in rescue range.

I'm 250 mi. Out. I can arrange a truck. So just in hopes that its this simple could this be a low fluid issue? I pulled the drainage screw an nothing comes out. Just hoping. I'm not looking to crash so I'll play it safe and figue out a way to get it home. Thanks.

You pulled the plug and nothing came out? Holy cow. When was your last service? Did you do it or have a shop? How long did you ride after you had symptoms? And regardless of who last serviced the tranny where did the oil go if there was fluid in it?

You have most likely done damage.

You will likely need serious repairs. But at this time it is probably repairable.

Add oil and try it.....Maybe it will last?

I would haul it home.

Seizure at speed is a real concern. And extreme damage will be done.

Cool thanks. Live and learn. Never have taken too good of care of my bikes. I need to do better. Thanks for all the input. I'll put oil in tomorrow and give it a spin.

Pull the bitch apart as soon as you can before you triple or quadruple the cost of the problem by launching parts of gears out through the case (like i did this spring on my 87)

..also imagine your back tire locking up unexpectedly .. Just imagine...

Here's what's going on: I noticed a few weeks ago that when I let off the accelerator there is a noise coming from under the truck. Sounds like maybe some sort of whining. At first I suspected differential. By after lifting the truck and putting it in drive, the noise is definitely tranny noise. I only notice the noise when I let of the throttle. Fluid level is in the full range. There is no loss of power or anything out of the ordinary as far as shifting and what not. I haven't noticed this noise before. Any ideas

Check for collapsed trans mount, metal rubbing on the trans and possible transfercase problem.

Truck is 2 wheel drive so transfer case is out.. And I'll look around under there for anything out of the ordinary.. I'm kinda leaning towards my tranny is gonna be taking a shit soon though. 220000 miles on it.

I know that they are the tits and all but not sure what else it could be. Truck has hardly towed its whole life. Theist it has ever towed was a tandem axle 22' v nose with monster truck tires. I did change the spin on filter a month or so ago and noticed the noise after the fact.

Did you take the magnet off the old filter and reuse it? The magnet could be missing but not sure if that would cause this.

The magnet was cleaned and replaced on the new filter. Also not sure of the brand on the filter I'd have to check, I know it's made in Merica though.

I stopped down by the stealership to see if they carried Allison filters. They said no! And asked what brand the trucks come with. They said ac Delco. Are they lying? Maybe idk. Any ideas on where to find Allison brand? And can I put some Lucas tranny additive in there?

Looking around under the truck last night I didn't notice anything abnormal. No broken mounts or nothing rubbing. I did however notice there is a breather on the back of the tranny. This cap is really loosely fitting and jingles around, kinda sounds like the noise I'm hearing. What's the possibility of air rushing out of that and making the noise? I think possible but unlikely since the noise is constant.

The AcDelco filters are Allison filters, just a lot more expensive and come in a blue box. The allison filters run around $8-12 at the Allison dealer. Go ahead and buy the one from the dealer and try it, might as well inform them that they are actually Allison filters in a AC Delco box.
BTW the Ac Delco fuel filters are made by Racor which sell for about 1/3 to 1/2 less than the dealer filters.

The gm dealerships are funny about Allisons. I've heard of them turning people away that wanted to get the fluid changed claiming gm doesn't reccomend it so they wouldn't do it. Any truth to this?
