Yes, everyone (rightfully, I suppose) remembers the two rock operas and one monolithically epic LP the most, and tends (also mostly rightfully) to forget what came later, but my personal favorite era of the Who is the pre-Tommy years, when they released a string of unforgettable singles, most of which are compiled on this LP (a must-own album of my secondary school years). What isn't so immediately obvious is that every one of the singles (and one 7" EP) released between the milestones of "My Generation" and "Pinball Wizard" is about fairly-serious criminal and/or pathological activity. With some of the songs, the fact is obscured by an unreliable narrator, but even those still contain subtle clues that are dead giveaways once they're noticed.
- Identity Theft & financial fraud (there's even a reference - probably unintentional, since I'm not sure if the phrase was in common usage at the time - to money laundering);
- Forced Feminization ("and what's wrong with that?!?", I hear you say);
- Stalking, probably in violation of restraining order, as the narrator tries to explain that he's -not- following the girl in question and is "surprised" to see her there ("Disguises", from the late-1966 'Ready Steady Who' EP and not on MBBB, but a fine song with what sounds like a very cool tape-loop rhythm track);
- Handicapped/Mentally-Disabled Abuse (physical and verbal);
- Pornography Distribution ("hey mister, would you like to see ... ?"), compulsive masturbation likely leading to indecent exposure;
- Domestic Violence (strangulation, corporeal & facial battery), by hallucinating schizophrenic;
- Gambling Addiction ("Dogs", the only A-side missing from this compilation, probably because it isn't really very good - the flip side, "Call Me Lightning", is better, but its lyric theme doesn't fit the pattern); and, finally,
- Hijacking of public transit vehicle (the line starting with "Now I..." gives away Townshend's intent by way of the Everly Brothers).
The album also includes an earlier song sung from the perspective of a deadbeat dad getting sued for child support. It's interesting that "Happy Jack" is the only song of the set not sung in the first person, no idea if that means anything more than being ok to sing about beating up your girlfriend, but drawing the line at a retard hunchback dwarf. And at least one thing this list is useful for: if anyone (including yourself!) gives you grief for holding any sort of forced feminization fantasies (I know, I know, NOBODY looking at my photos here would ever think about such things!), you can just look at it and immediately see seven things that are, like, -actually- bad. Tell them to come back to complain after you've done one of those seven (but obviously, please don't ... except, of course, you're a hot Flickr girl posting photos of herself that might fall under category #4, in which case, please carry on)
In addition to those eight 7" records (6 of which are included on this album), the other single the Who released during that time frame doesn't count, since it's not Pete Townshend songs, but Rolling Stones covers (done as an act of "solidarity" after the Stones were busted for drugs). Are "Under My Thumb" and "The Last Time" the Stones' most sexist/misogynist songs? Probably not, but Backstreet Girl, Stray Cat Blues, Midnight Rambler, Brown Sugar, Bitch, Star Star (and others I'm sure I'm forgetting) hadn't been written yet ...
