This pops up a lot in child psychology. Children tend to gravitate to the familiar, because they’re always learning something new everyday. They need a routine or structure to stay grounded.
It’s a coping mechanism that extends into adulthood. Nothing wrong with it. Mental health is incredibly important.
ATLA is definitely a comfort thing for me. Not just beautiful it's familiar, just that it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy while watching it. What I wouldn't give for the opportunity to watch it again with a fresh perspective!
Well, I’m glad it’s not a bad thing, because I do it kind of a lot
I used to do this in MMO's in my early teens. I'd almost be "afraid" of learning to quest in a new zone. So I'd be content with making 5 or more characters and repeating the same 1 or 2 zones that I knew.
Then venturing out into another one when prodded or grouped with a friend and repeating the process.
It was so weird looking back at it.
I wondered why kids TV programmes usually follow a copy-paste story structure with very little variation these days (it used to grate at me having it in the background).
tbh I dislike rewatching shows since I know what happens in every episode it gets boring and repetitive. Same with me for movies. (The office is the only exception for me)
That is a relief to hear it isn't a bad thing, since i do this a lot.
Someone needs to let r/dundermifflin know
My best friend does this. Bones, Castle, and Avatar are about the only things she watches
What’s the opposite of this? For example someone who hates rewatching anything, always seeks change, gets quickly bored with the familiar, and always feels like they have to be in a constant state transition?
This is me and I’d like to be psychoanalyzed please
I had VHS tapes as a child that I literally wore out because I would rewatch them so much. Drove my mom absolutely insane
This is also why kids love watching the same movie over and over again.
In a world where they are constantly bombarded with new information, it's soothing to watch something where they know what is coming next and there are no surprises.
I work as a preschool teacher and I can definitely vouch for this. Routines help children feel a sense of security at school too so that they’d feel more emotionally secure.
My ex introduced me to Avatar and I absolutely love it. I was hesitant to try Korra after, because I didn't know how well a sequel series would hold up and I was pleasantly surprised. Be open to new stuff guys!
The wise Guru Laghima advocated strongly for change. Let go your earthly tether. Enter the void. Empty and watch new shows
IMO It’s great as a stand alone, but not a sequel
