Mashable is celebrating Pride Month by exploring the modern LGBTQ world, from the people who make up the community to the spaces where they congregate, both online and off.
What do you do when you can't see yourself directly represented on the screen? Find a character, point at them, and say "big mood."
This is especially true in the realm of animation, where it feels like an uphill battle to find stories that reflect any positive sense of the trans experience. Some TV shows and movies, especially for kids, seem to be testing the waters of mainstream LGBT+ acceptance. Adding same-sex couples as background characters and subtle expressions of queer love is definitely a big win in modern-day cartoons. However, it's still rare that trans characters get their animated time to shine.
That's why the community feels kinship toward certain characters, regardless of any explicit representation — maybe their story's themes center around personal transformation or concealing a part of themselves. Maybe they cross-dress on screen, or seem to reject stereotypical gender roles. Or maybe they've just got that certain je ne sais trans vibe.
We turned to members of the trans community to find out which animated characters they connect with most. Canon be damned, here are 15 of them.
There are a LOT of feelings about Danny out there.
"Any sort of character who has a magical transformation is Trans culture because the duality of 'normal'/'magical' selves represents being in the closet. Yeah like, there’s a 'magical' version of you that’s incredibly powerful and also 'who you really are' but you have to keep it a secret from your family? That’s Trans Baby." — Mallika S.
Then, of course, there's this scene . Now, that's what I call chest dysphoria.
These fan-favorite antagonists of Team Rocket were notorious for donning elaborate, gender-bending disguises in the anime to nab some Pokémon and defeat those meddling kids. They're not so much genuinely evil as they are hilariously incompetent — and their plans always had to involve being as Extra as possible.
Oftentimes they can be seen either both dressing up as women, or with Jessie taking on a masculine costume and James a feminine one (which frequently got censored in America, of course.)
Besides the flamboyant gender presentation, both grew up with difficult home lives . By uniting under similar experiences as adults, their relationship perfectly captures the most trans concept of all — found families.
"I know everyone says their Disney 'trans awakening' was Mulan , but mine was Hercules . I mean, come on. The main character literally sings a song about wanting to find a place where he belongs! Everyone in his hometown rejects him as a freak! He gets swole and has to learn from an older male figure how to act all manly and stuff! Tell me that is not every trans dude you've ever met." — Aiden J.
Even fans of the original anime may not be familiar with these characters — they only appeared in the final season, which has yet to receive an English dub. They're an alien group of female fighters who presented as men to form a boy band to look for their lost princess on Earth, so we gotta talk about them!
In the manga it's made abundantly clear that they are women who are simply cross-dressing for the sake of their mission. But in the anime it's complicated by the fact that they transform physically into male bodies and their main leader, Seiya, has a romantic arc with Sailor Moon. Also, it's implied that Seiya, above the others, kind of likes being a guy.
Canon matters less to me in this case, because the first time that gender-reveal transformation happened (featuring a black leather outfit, no less!), 12-year-old me was shook.
" Howl's Moving Castle is a film that's all about appearances, being seen, and seeing other people's true nature. Howl himself is categorized by others as being vain and self-centered — he even throws a temper tantrum when his hair is accidentally dyed orange, saying 'I see no point in living if I can't be beautiful. ' But a lot of us can relate to focusing so hard on aesthetic and outward appearances to reflect how we feel inside.
Also, on a lighter note, that Look. The single dangling earring? The flowing shirts and tight pants? That man is Not cis. You know, now that we're talking about it, Turnip Head is ALSO trans, just 'cause I said so. His transition from scarecrow to Real Man is a metaphor ... or something." — Anonymous
This one is arguably a controversial take . So let's start with the canon: Pidge presents as male for the first few episodes of the series, an identity she assumes in order to find her missing family. Eventually, the big twist was ... she's a cis girl. And that was that for the rest of the series. Except a lot of trans fans couldn't help but feel robbed — the writers referred to Pidge with they/them pronouns in the first season writer's room to preserve the twist, and in an official comic. Fans overall felt that, despite the writers' intentions, Pidge's experiences on the show were very trans-coded . She had another character awkwardly offering support, then had an emotional "coming out" scene.
Even the comments on a tweet from the official Voltron Twitter account about Pidge's gender are mostly just trans folks going, "that's nice but ... nah."
For a show that's been groundbreaking in its representation of queer love and relationships, Steven Universe hasn't really delved that much into the 'T' of the LGBTQ (besides confirming that gems are genderless and use she/her pronouns). But many fans feel strongly that if anyone in the large cast of characters is trans, it has to be Lars .
Lars is a character largely concerned with how people perceive him. He frequently acts out or puts on a facade of toxic masculinity in order to be read as "cool." While these traits can easily be assigned to any insecure cis dude, they're also relatable to people early on in their transition trying to navigate society's pressure to conform to gender roles.
There's also an episode that includes a flashback to his childhood, in which he tries to “rip himself out” of an old photo, saying he “can’t let people see [him] like that.”
And he wears gauges! As Reddit user /LaDiDaLady writes , "Gauges are not an uncommon way for FTM men to signal masculinity and queerness."
The Zelda games have always had their main characters switch gender presentations, physically change bodies, and blur gender roles for a multitude of reasons.
In the game Ocarina of Time, Zelda assumes the alter ego of a male warrior to protect her identity, but also physically transforms to have broad shoulders and a deep voice. More recently, in Breath of the Wild, Link dons female Gerudo garb in order to set foot in Gerudo Town, where no men are allowed.
Even the series creator and Ocarina of Time game producer have said in interviews that Link was designed specifically to be "gender neutral" so that we could all could identify with him.
"Most of the feelings for her come from the fact that she says 'translocating' [voice line during her translocator teleport in-game]." Aah, the puns. According to the Overwatch Wikia , it's Sombra's 'ability to Translocate and camouflage herself makes her a hard target to pin down.' And 'Sombra' also isn't actually her real name — after having her former identity erased, she emerged from hiding with a new persona and a cybernetic graft. "The girl," Sombra said "was gone."
"Also she has an undercut and is Cool. So we’re just like 'She’s ours, fuck off.'" — Emory O.
Mrs. Frizzle's legacy, as portrayed by the incomparable Lily Tomlin, is undeniably queer . But thanks to a theory gaining traction on Tumblr, she's become part of trans culture, too. This theory posits that Ms. Frizzle is actually a grown-up version of Arnold, who's traveled back in time to give her pre-transition self some much-needed life lessons and emotional reassurance. Also, she has a whole closet full of pickles !
There's nothing more trans than wanting your mother to give you basic respect and call you by your correct name. Jenny longs to be recognized as both a "daughter" to her mother, and as a "normal" teenage girl by her peers. She's Jenny , not XJ9 — and don't you forget it.
Netflix's re-boot of She-Ra is already pretty freaking gay, y'all . Like, the gayest. But even a show with a big reputation for its queer aesthetic and representation can do more! There are additional characters the community can still claim as part of their team! Bow is one of them.
Bow is the only guy in a sea of princess, but he actually may have once been a princess, according to this theory . In Season 2 we're also introduced to his two dads (side note: TWO DADS!), and a storyline in which he has to come out ... as wanting to be a badass archer in the Resistance rather than a librarian, like they raised him to be. Yeah okay, we see you, thinly veiled trans metaphor .
Not only was she considered an outcast and ostracized as a child for being born out of a forbidden romance, but she also spends the series fighting angels and also God. Very relatable.
In a Patreon fan article titled Bayonetta is Trans , trans artist Alexis Sara writes, "In Bayonetta 2 heaven and hell are after her and nothing says being trans as thinking you got a community then finding out how many people are out for you in that community."
Then there's her entire look, per Sara: "Her fashion choice illustrates her transness as well ... there is her heels. I mean what’s more trans that having a pair of bombass heels that actually have guns in them to protect you from chasers and bigots."
Considered Disney's first "boy princess," the character Marco is huge with LGBTQ kids online right now. During the first season, he disguised himself as a princess , wearing a dress and assuming she/her pronouns to infiltrate a princess boarding school. He then ended up turning into a revolutionary figure for princesses everywhere.
The fan support is strong, and the theories are intricate and intense . In the age of content creators using social media to connect with fans directly, story board artists on the show are actually aware and supportive . Whether or not that means anything for the canon is up in the air, but knowing that you are seen by those behind the scenes is a big deal, nonetheless.
There's an entire episode of the show called " Dipper vs. Manliness ," in which Dipper attempts a tough "mansformation" to become a "real man." Hmm 🤔.
By the end of the series, we've also never learned Dipper's birth name (and find out he's been wishing he had a different name. If you're wondering, he wanted it to be " Tyrone ").
Hatsune Miku (not really a "character" in the traditional sense, but lots of trans people love her nonetheless ); Spider-Man (this interpretation mainly comes from Spider-Man: Homecoming , so we had to pass); Samus from Metroid ( kinda-canon , kinda-not); She-Ra (basically any and all magical girls who trans form ); and Mulan (arguably the most popular recent transcanon ).
While going "same!" at certain characters is a roaring good time, we should demand more of the media we consume on a daily basis. Think about the trans representation we do get from animation as a whole — mostly adult cartoons that rely on the same 3 tropes we've been rolling our eyes at since the '90s. Characters like Mr. Garrison becoming Mrs. Garrison on South Park , or Alice from SuperJail! are just transphobic edgelord humor disguised as progressiveness.
There's nothing even inherently "adult" about being trans. When representation is real, everyone benefits , both children and adults. This is why explicitly stated, well-written, positive trans characters are absolutely necessary — headcanoning and theorizing are fun, but they can only get us so far. We deserve better than simply dreaming that a character's personal journey matches our own.
