[Tragic fate of China tycoon] Hotel owner Lau Hei-Wing got tortured to death. Kimberley Hotel is sold for 30% less than valued, buyer is suspected to be the Ministry of Finance, PRC.

Everyday countless people pass by the Kimberley Hotel in Tsim Sha Tsui, but little do people know about the brutal story behind the former hotel owner, Stephen Lau Hei-Wing. Lau Hei-Wing has proved the horrid behind China’s power struggles with his own death. Lau has strong companions in China, including Liu Yunshan, former First Secretary of the Central Secretariat of the Communist Party of China, and Jia Chunwang, Procurator–General of the Supreme People's Procuratorate. However, Lau was taken into custody from Yanbian People's Procuratorate 3 years ago without reason. Eventually he died brutally after being tortured for more than 50 days in the most northeastern city of China. The culprit remains unknown till today.
Lau’s property – Kimberley Hotel is now being sold for HK$4.3 billion, which is 30% less than its original worth (HK$6 billion). Apple Daily discovered that the buyer behind is very likely to be China Ministry of Finance. The incident cause suspicion that CCP does not only murder the Hong Kong tycoon, but also embezzled his property.
The government court released the autopsy and leaked it online strangely. Lau disappeared in Tianjin in 2016 November, but suddenly was announced dead in 2017 March in Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture, the most northeastern border of China. He was tortured by 9 former prosecutors for more than 50 days until his death. All 9 former prosecutors are being prosecuted. According to the charge sheet online, Lau was blindfolded and tied to an interrogation chair. His legs were being lifted up high, his feet were stabbed with keys, his nose and mouth were stabbed with toilet plunger. His legs were tied to a chair during the interrogation, but Lau refused to give in. The prosecutor lifted Lau’s hands behind and struck his head against his legs. Lau lost consciousness and finally was certified. According to the autopsy report, Lau suffered bone fractures in seven places, including his sternum and ribs, and suffocated to death.
Lai Hei-Wing’s wife Liu Fangfei, a prominent CCTV anchor, is traumatized by her husband’s sudden death. She would hold up Lau’s portrait in the prosecution court of her husband’s to show her anger. Once she sat down, she would face the portrait to herself and place it close to her heart. Liu Fangfei has indicated “When you miss someone, then you are never separated. When there is memory, then you are together forever.” In her weibo on March 19th, a year after her husband’s death. On September 28th, she has also written a sad note of “Even though the world cares about embellishment, but some things are better to be transparent, for example, air and heart.” It is a pity that she has hosted so many Chinese New Year programme, but when her husband died for nothing, she has nowhere to voice out. Out of the 9 prosecutors, one was sentenced to 13 years in jail, the rest were only sentenced to 1-5 years. However, these former prosecutors had nothing against Lau, why would they torture him to death? Who is behind all these? These are all mysteries till today.
Lau Hei-Wing was not particularly active in Hong Kong, but did very well in China. A lot of Hong Kong businessmen used Lau’s connections to get into the China market, including Nina Kung Yu-Sum, Asia’s richest woman and former Chairman of Chinachem Group. Under Lau’s assistance, Kung was able to built connections with politicians and businessman in China. According to the businessmen who knew Lau at that time, they would refer Lau as ‘people around Ministry of Security’. Liu Mengxiong, former CCP member, is Lau’s friend for over 20 years. Liu said, “Someone advised Lau to be honest, Lau believed that and released a lot of information. That spread the matter and made things worse, as it involved a lot of people. Then someone wanted to kill him to stop him from testifying.” He continued, “In China, most people get tortured to death during the arrest by police. It is very rare to die in the hands of prosecutors like Lau.”
According to the information from company registry, China Cinda Asset Management controls China Fortune Financial Group Ltd, Modern Land, SouthGobi Resources. The biggest stockholder behind China Cinda Asset Management is Ministry of Finance of the People's Republic of China, and 19% of Silver Grant Int’s stock belongs to Cinda Asset. Over 70% of China Cinda Asset stock is owned by Ministry of Finance of the People's Republic of China and National Council for Social Security Fund. That being said, Kimberley Hotel will very likely become China government’s property from a private enterprise.
Bruce Lui, Senior Lecturer Director of Chinese Journalism Concentration in Hong Kong Baptist University who specializes in contemporary China politics, believes this fits China norms. This is one way of taking over private enterprise. Lui said, “Now China needs money, and they start to sell their overseas assets or use all kinds of ways to control private enterprise and turn them into government owned.” He thinks China must go through middle man, “Use the identity of businessman to do something beneficial for the country.” This seems to be a market activity with tracks more hidden, in order to minimize the concerns from society. It is better than China forcefully taking over private enterprise. Chinese aircraft carrier Liaoning is an example. It started when a private enterprise in Hong Kong purchased it for China and claimed that it’s for promoting tourism. Afterwards it ended up in the hands of China.
