(Rachel Kovach/The Penn) The season of giving is upon us, once again. 17 nov. 2024 · It was announced by the university earlier this week that Norm, IUP’s beloved mascot, would get phased out entirely for the remainder of the semester, with a new “Crimson Turkey” taking his place. “We have made the difficult decision to retire Norm for the remainder of the fall semester,” IUP said in a press release. 6 oct. 2024 · On the morning of Tuesday, Oct. 3, there was an assassination attempt on IUP’s mascot, Norm. Norm was giving a speech that morning to celebrate IUP’s recent victory over our enemy, Slippery Rock. One of the audience members rushed the stage and fired three shots before being tackled by Norm’s ROTC Guard. 6 oct. 2024 · Starting next week, IUP will be forming a “horse-punching” team, very similar to the cow-tipping team shirts that are sold in the Co-op store. “The idea actually came to us from two different sources,” Eli Quine (senior, veterinary science) said. IUP’s official mascot, the Crimson Hawk, is named Norm! Norm gets his name from IUP’s roots. IUP was initially named “Indiana Normal School” in 1875, then changing to “Indiana State College” in 1959, and finally “Indiana University of Pennsylvania” in 1965 after achieving university status. 16 déc. 2006 · Nick Posey, of Red Lion, York County, an IUP student of American Indian descent, said he was pleased with the decision to change the nickname, although he considered Crimson Hawks "generic.". 22 déc. 2006 · IUP opted for the switch in nomenclature after the NCAA Executive Committee ruled in May that the university's previous nickname was deemed hostile or abusive to Native Americans. IUP President Dr. Tony Atwater indicated the selection of Crimson Hawks as the official new nickname was guided by marketing considerations as well as. In December 2006, the Council of Trustees adopted the "Crimson Hawk" The mascot was introduced during the 2007 season-opening football game against Cheyney. In 2008, the hawk was named "Norm", in reference to the university's former name as the Indiana Normal School. 5 mai 2024 · Recently, IUP announced that it was extending its study abroad program to a new location, that being the International Space Station (ISS). “We are delighted to announce that, beginning in the summer of 2024, we will be opening a study abroad campaign with the [ISS],” IUP said in a press release.
