Not too bad as a story of a little girl lost made good, but if you're looking for a lot of salacious details about the world of 80s porn, look elsewhere. She devotes about a chapter and a half to her 3 year porn career, as opposed to later in the book when she devotes an entire chapter to a few days she spent in Paris doing some modeling, and several chapters to filming the movie Crybaby.
There is considerable controversy in her depiction of herself as out of her mind on drugs during her career in adult films; she is contradicted not only by the people she worked with but also by her own descriptions. At one point she reveals her mom's relationship with her boyfriend is troubled by his cocaine use; a few chapters later she purports to not even know what cocaine is when offered it by porn agent "Tim North," even though she has already written about running with a stoner, rocker crowd in school.
Those years were certainly powerfully traumatic and emotional for her, so maybe she remembers it that way; in any event, she certainly suffered from a troubled upbringing and an abusive, thoroughly power-imbalanced relationship with her stepfather, who it seems more likely was the one who gave her the cocaine. She does admit that sex and the power she felt it gave her were also powerfully addictive, and I wonder how many reviewers who paint her as manipulative and sociopathic are forgetting how young she was and engaging in reactionary victim shaming.
I thought it interesting to read about her trying so hard to put together a legitimate "life after porn". Maybe she has another book in her on the subject of those "missing years" in porn ... or maybe she's finally put it all behind her forever, once and for all. If so, good for her.
Through Vanity Fair I followed a Podcast on Traci Lords which was quite interesting. But it continually tried to read too much in to the story. Did Traci wait till it was to hear advantage to admit she was underage? Did she purposely mean to see the competitors and others convicted of felonies? Was this book really full of lies as the Podcast and the interviews accused? Or was it like normal views where everything sees things differently and instead it's just a girl living her very unique life? Who really knows.
For the book at hand I really enjoyed reinforcing what I had heard. But unlike the Podcast, I didn't see any real massive falsehoods. Yes, names are changed in some cases but I generally found the stories to match. Particularly of the ex-boyfriends and how someone begins shooting nude while still in High School. Yea, that's going to get discovered.
Overall, glad to put this history down but really glad I read this story of a unique person.
Ms. Lords covers the difficult and the fun with what seems to be an honest introspection. Information on the sordid past that she survived is not exactly new nor revelatory, but complete and straightforward. Never tawdry or maudlin.
The rise of her career and personal redemption is told in sufficient detail to begin to get a real sense of her personality, and of the culture of Hollywood and it's media-enablers.
Of particular delight to me are the insights into some of the less-well-known characters of Hollywood, like John Waters. I also found the inclusion of personal photos a joy.
All in all, I think the book will do what fans desire; give them a more detailed look at a strong-spirited woman and her complex path to her ultimate "happily ever after."
I read all the reviews before purchasing the book and had mixed feelings - but purchased it nonetheless for the fact that I have wanted to read it since it came out. I applaud Ms. Lords for spilling her heart and life out as she did in this book -- IN HER OWN WORDS. I thought her writing was very well and the telling of HER STORY was enlightening and kept me engaged to the very end. Ms. Lords endured a great deal of horrific experiences that I could not imagine living through - let alone come out of it with happiness and her head held high. Had it been anyone else, they would have taken their own life and/or OD'd on their drug of choice and crawled back under the rock -- she did neither. Through persistence and survival mode, she reinvented herself over and over again. She kept her tenacity and fought back with every ounce of her being -- that's for sure. Bottom line, I am very pleased that I purchased the book and am sad that it took this long to do so. I am also glad that her life has turned into what she always wanted -- happy with someone to love and with someone who loves her right back. Congratulations, as no one deserved such an outcome than she. (To those who ever condemned her or her past - shame on you. I will bet you could have never survived 24 minutes - let alone hours in her shoes.) I would recommend this book to any adult who wishes to read it.
If you are one of those that want to read this book to see the inside of the porn industry, especially told by a porn actress then you would be disappointed like me. But If you want to know and learn from the life of a remarkable human being, then that is an absolute reason to read this book.
Traci Lords took the porn industry by storm. Her short but solid participation in porn gave her the name of porn queen but certainly she was a confused girl who was on drugs and did not know what went on at the time.
For obvious reasons, Traci did not talked much about that topic in the book and we all can understand why. She must be sick and tired of the same old questions.
I keep reading, anyway and found out the story of an extraordinary and strong woman who decided to stand up against all odds. I cruel society that condemned her now matter what she did and how hard she tried to mend her mistakes.
This woman not only conquered the film industry. She was a singer, activist and now a writer. I grew up seeing the cover of her porn films and felt so attracted by her sensual look and natural beauty, but now I can see that there is so much more underneath the looks and her great appearance. There is an extraordinary woman that despite all the negative things that she had in her life had the time to find herself and find love! There is much more of Traci underneath it all. Great book.
5.0 out of 5 stars Almost finished it
Reading through this I felt very sorry for Traci as she described her life during the late 80s/early 90s for what she did in the early 80s. She seems like a very down to earth woman constantly haunted by her porn past. The book was released in 2003 so obviously it’s been some time ago, I can only hope she’s still not haunted.
4.0 out of 5 stars very good individual and absolutely crazy the things she describes
Geez, the winner takes it all Traci? If half the things I read were true, I'd be scared about US social care. She went extremely far, I took that much, very good individual and absolutely crazy the things she describes. Highly reccommended.
4.0 out of 5 stars An eventual success story...
This was a depressing read until half way through. It reminded me that as a society we have some very hypocritical attitudes to porn. It’s great to see Traci did finally transcend her early career.
I'm a sucker for a "triumph over tragedy" autobiography. This one inspired me to pen my own memoirs. Exceptional and inspirational.
This book is really good.
It's heartbreaking to read some parts.
The people who claimed it's just a sob story, obviously would never understand how it is to have had her life experiences.
Super good, and an inspiration.
