History

“I attended my first year in primary school in Holland during the second world war. There was a shortage of teachers (this was while all teachers were still male!). My first teacher was a retired professor in Philosophy. He did NOT start arithmetic with learning to count. He in fact NEVER mentioned arithmetic. He introduced us to Mathematics.

He taught us (6-year-olds) that mathematics is the language of describing and understanding the behavior of God’s creation.”

He introduced us to the characters of (what he called) the number-bet (alphabet of numbers 0-9) and the operators (signs) +, – and =. After having learned the characters and the operators and the rules for applying the operators we applied the language of mathematics to solve problems of counting, addition and subtraction.

Within one year we were multiplying numbers because it is merely repeated addition. We were dividing numbers because it is merely repeated subtraction. After two years the ‘philosopher teacher’ was replaced by a proper teacher. Fortunately, nothing I learned in the conventional way could destroy what I had learned in my first two years. More important:

I learned to love the language of mathematics!

This has allowed me to pursue a successful career in technology, engineering, science, business and academics. On my retirement, in 2002, I decided to solve the problem of teaching mathematics to pre and primary school learners. After 12 years of research, development and testing the result is TOWER MATHS!”

• The majority of all people worldwide have a fear of mathematics. Many matriculated young people in SA are unemployable because they lack essential skills in mathematics.

Our Focus

Towermaths focus on the foundational numeracy skills in pre-primary and primary school and therefore concentrate on Grade R to Grade 3. It is a breakthrough in teaching mathematics and developed by Prof. Koop Lubbinge over a period of 15 years. Our aim is to teach mathematics in a fun way in order to get rid of any fear for numbers. We need to get parents to take responsibility for their child’s future by giving them the opportunity to develop mathematical skills as early as the age of 4 or 5.

Our Unique Methodology

Our method is based on the latest neurological research on how the brain functions using brain scans. We concentrate on the development phase of the learner’s brain between ages 4 and 9. For more info refer to the academic principles.

Overview

Towermaths is a unique method of teaching mathematics and focusing on the foundation stage in a leaner’s development. The Department of Education agreed to implement Towermaths in 4 schools at the beginning of 2017. We get excellent feedback from teachers and principals and they just want to proceed with our mentoring.

Towermaths methodology teaches learners to understand mathematics like a language such as English, Afrikaans, or Xhosa.

Learners are taught to visualize numbers, just as they are taught to visualize a cat or any other object and recognize them by name. This includes the number “0”. They are taught to build a number tower. Each number has a unique position on the tower. They learn how to use +, – and =.This is the basis for further development. Learners see the picture of the mathematical equation.

Towermaths can be taught from as young as the age of four years. It is suitable for all persons who would like to become numerate.

Our aim is to have 1000 000 learners on this program in 2020. In order to do this, we need mentors to assist us with training. The business model will be an agency with a mentor or more than one. Towermaths will provide feedback on a monthly basis to parents in terms of the progress of the learner and communication will take place electronically. Testing will be done on a monthly basis with feedback.

3.     The Towermaths flagship tutoring systems

•  Our Curriculum is based on improving the numerical skills of Foundation Phase Learners. (*Please note that we only take learners in the Foundation Phase (GRADE RR TO GRADE 2)). We have our own Towermaths Curriculum and therefore we require the learners to start from the beginning of our program. Classes available in Afrikaans and English.
• Usually, the learner starts at Grade R level and proceeds to Grade 4. In other cases (when the learner is in Grade 2 to Grade 4) we do a certain program called “Fast Tracking” where learners, who have not started from Grade R, are taken through from the beginning. (This all depends on their ability and numerical skills).
• We have found that parents are frustrated because they do not have the correct tools or guidance to teach their children at home during and after Covid-19. And that is why we have developed these 2 options for parents: 

The Tutor will evaluate the learner on our portal and you will receive results of their child’s progress every month.

Tutorships

Towermaths tutorship will be offered to individuals who commit to the implementation of our Towermaths program through interactive classroom teaching or online. The business model will be done on an agency principle whereby the Tutor will establish his or her own site. The tutor will apply on our website and need to submit all relevant documentation on the website. The selection committee will evaluate all applications and the committee will arrange for an interview if necessary.

• Low Cost

It will not be a franchise and therefore the establishment cost is very low.

• Supplies

Towermaths will supply the bulk of the learning material.

• Tutors

The Mentor will register on our website after approval and will be responsible to get their learners/clients together.

• Parents

The parent of the learner will register on the Towermaths website.

• Support

Downloadable audio-visual lesson recordings and interactive webinars will be available to assist mentors.
