Ladies, there's nothing scary about pleasuring yourself and Swedish singer Tove Lo is here to remind women to embrace their sexuality — and forget the haters along the way.
In an interview with Time Out New York on Tuesday, the 29-year-old pop singer told the site she won't stop flashing people at her concerts (she has been saying this for a while) and definitely won't apologize for masturbating in own music video.
“Seriously, we can see a guy get shot in the head without any problems. Yes, I’m masturbating, but why is female sexuality so scary?,” she told the site.

The video she is referring to is her 2016 release of "Fairy Dust," where she masturbates on a bed during the end credits. The video was initially banned by YouTube when it was released.
After the ban, Lo went on Twitter to express her frustration, using the hashtag #imnotevennaked.

She also talked about working on that specific scene with Time Out.
"I was the least nervous. I wouldn’t have done it if I wasn’t sure I could,” she said. “They filmed all the way through... after the third [take] I said, 'Guys, I don’t have one more in me. I’m done!'"
Lo also talked about the pressures of apologizing every time she flashes a crowd, something she feels she needs to do because of her sex.
"The crowds flash me back — guys and girls. I shouldn’t need to apologize. Because I’m a woman, I have to. There’s so much more to me than the vagina stuff.”
And she's right: There tends to be a double standard when it comes to men's and women's sexuality. As Teen Vogue points out, the #FreeTheNipple movement is one of the biggest examples of this.
And experts (and women) will tell you, when it comes to the female orgasm, it's more than just vaginal intercourse.

Female masturbation is often used to signal that a woman is a crazed, obsessive stalker.
Female masturbation has been big in pop lately. Whether it’s titillating videos like Selena Gomez’s “ Hands to Myself ” and Miley Cyrus’ “ Adore You ” – with masturbation as a sexual performance for the male gaze – or empowering songs encouraging women to take pleasure into their own hands, like Lady Gaga’s “ Dancing in Circles ”, Miss Eave’s “ Hump Day ”, Hailee Steinfeild’s “ Love Myself ”, Charlie XCX’s “ Body of My Own ”, and FKA Twigs’ “ Kicks ”, images of women’s self-love are popping up more and more regularly in music.
The latest comes from Tove Lo in her short film Fairy Dust . It’s basically a collection of music videos for her songs (“Influence”, “Lady Wood”, “True Disaster”, “Cool Girl” and “Vibes”) strung together with a vague love triangle narrative. But the part that has caught public attention comes as the credits roll. Tove Lo lies on a bed while her song “What I Want for the Night (Bitches)” plays – a song about casual sex with women (“Bitches, I don’t trust ‘em, but they give me what I want for the night). She’s masturbating.
There’s no nudity, but the song was taken down from YouTube for being sexually explicit – and got lots of the papers talking.
I’ve written before about the way female masturbation is often used to signal that a woman is a crazed, obsessive stalker . We’ve seen it in “Hands to Myself”, Skins , Single White Female , The Exorcist , Stoker and more, and the message is always the same: masturbation is a sign of perversion, because normal, good girls don’t pleasure themselves. If a woman will go to such lengths as touching herself to get her kicks, who knows where her debauchery will end?!
Is that what’s happening in Fairy Dust , too? Before the masturbation scene, we hear Tove Lo’s voiceover darkly mutter: “Nobody knows me, knows all the dark sides, all the things that really go on in my head when I talk to people. Sociopath, psychopath. What if he’s right?” Both her and her co-star Lina Esco’s characters are portrayed as a little unbalanced – crashing cars together, laughing manically or screaming in fear. “Fuck, what the fuck is wrong with these girls?”, as a baffled male cab driver says to Esco.
At the end of Lo’s masturbation scene, we see that Esco is watching. To either enjoy watching masturbation, or enjoy being watched masturbating, is another classic trope of “crazy sexual girl” behaviour.
But Tove Lo also intentionally plays with anti-feminist stereotypes. Take “Cool Girl”, a song that takes a sexist construct invented by men and runs wild with it. “Now you can’t tell if I’m really ironic,” Lo sings. Like Taylor Swift’s “ Blank Space ” video, it embraces an anti-feminist narrative to an extreme. You want crazy? I’ll give you crazy .
Filmed though a masculine lens, with Lo’s head cropped out of shot, the masturbation scene here functions as the cherry on top of a video that hovers between these two spaces, part a rejection of the sexually exciting yet damaged trope, part an erotic embrace of the same stereotype.

Fresh off the release of her sophomore album, Lady Wood , Tove Lo has unleashed a 31-minute short film that tackles themes of sexuality, obsession, feminism, and probably a dozen more things you’ll miss on the first view.
The Lemonade -style film, titled Fairy Dust , features five tracks from Lady Wood : “Influence,” “Lady Wood,” “True Disaster,” “Cool Girl,” and “Vibes.” There’s a lot going on here: First, Tove is manically laughing then wheezily sobbing her way through a motel, then she hits a dark nightclub, crashes her car in downtown L.A., buzzes her hair, grinds atop a glass casket in the desert, and sets her motel room ablaze. In the NSFW end credits scene, she’s seen masturbating while a brand-new song, “What I Want for the Night (Bitches),” plays.
Fairy Dust was apparently so intensely sexual that it was removed from YouTube and is now only available on Vevo . To which Tove simply says, “HA.” Watch the whole thing here .
On Twitter, the Swedish singer said Fairy Dust is about the “never ending escape” and “all the rushes” that come with it. It’s also the first installment of a two-part series that involves another album and short film, expected in 2017. According to EW , that sequel LP and film will chronicle “climaxes and comedowns” and explore “what happens when those sparks start to cool.” Intriguing!
