Ted Wachtel is the author of Dreaming of a New Reality: How Restorative Practices Reduce Crime and Violence, Improve Relationships and Strengthen Civil Society and Restorative Justice Conferencing, Volume 1: Real Justice ; and the coauthor of Toughlove . Wachtel is the founder and former president of the International Institute for Restorative Practices Graduate School in Pennsylvania. David York was the coauthor, along with his wife Phyllis, of Toughlove Solutions . He died in 2007.

I was raised on this book by a single mother. She brought up two girls who are productive members of society. I have raised my son with many of the same teachings in this book and have a great 10 year old boy due to setting boundries and clear communication on expectations. The terminology might be old in this book, but you are reading it for an outline not as a bible for what needs to be done. I am currently the "Wicked Step-Mother" to a child a year younger than my own who is out of control. He exhibits behaviors very similar to most of the stories in the book. His Father never really set boundries or structure with him and doesn't understand how to do it. He has done a 10 week parenting class which I don't feel was retained as I have done one was well and used those tools along with this book to raise a healthy child up to this point. I purchased this book again to read as a couple with my Husband. I want to give him insight on what it means to have rules and how rules and boundries make children feel safe. Instead of having a 9 year old who threatens your life and constantly steals and lies which is the current situation I am in. I know this book does not work for everyone and it's not an end all cure, but it does give very good insight on how a parent child relationship should work from my point of view. I am sorry to the people who were raised with it and are resentful, but coming from a 30something year old woman raising a child of her own with these philosophies and raising another child who has not been introduced to them I can tell you there is a stark difference in respect and behavior and I will continue to institue these teachings in my home.
The focus of this book is showing examples of how loving, caring, responsible parents can provide guidance to their children, maintain their place and authority as parents in charge of their family, while instilling a solid system of desirable social values and behaviors in their charges at several stages in their growth as human beings. This book suggests that parents first understand their primary mission is to guide children in the way they should go with love, mutual respect and demonstrated concern and caring at each step, retaining and exercising attitudes and disciplines required to convey important messages which will assist children to make good choices throughout their lives. This book suggests parents recognize and utilize their powers of experience, education, and position to manage relationships between parents and their children with firmness, kindness, compassion, and absolute authority as necessary. This book shows how to maintain control of situations for all concerned. I originally bought this book when it was first published as a potential guide to my own parenting. This time, I bought the book to provide an overly permissive daughter an outline of how to conduct and manage a relationship with a very self-involved, somewhat selfish, adult daughter of her own. This book provides everything except the symbolic cane.
I gave this book to my neice for support when her 16 year old daughter began venturing off the path into unchartered 2021 territory-
When this book was published many years ago, I was able to apply it's principles to my "out of control" teenage sons. Many years later I purchased the second copy for a dear friend who is going through difficulties with his teenager. The information is just as timely now as in the past. I believe anyone can apply these principles to their relationships with a positive outcome. Just be prepared for the situation to get worse before it gets better. Easy read. It works.

Great book.. Especially if you have children who are acting out because of the loss of a loved one or divorce etc.. It's so good.. This is my 2nd book I had to buy for my friend.
Yes. You need to send this to that woman who never stops complaining about how horrible her kids have become. It is the ultimate wise up and be strong guidebook. Don't be confused and get the other one with more on drug addiction than behavior. This is the original.

The highest form of love is TOUGH LOVE! It is hard BUT if you love your kids you MUST parent them!
This book is very straightforward and provides many workable solutions to a tough problem...raising teenagers.
