On the northern side of the African continent lies a mountain range that completely defies the conventional concept of African mountaineering – there are no jungles, no elephants or giraffes roaming the savannah.

Foothills of the Atlas Mountains, viewed from the Sahara Desert

The Atlas Mountains, located entirely within Morocco, bear little resemblance to their African location – they are dry, relatively high mountains, their peaks blanketed in snow in winter and parched by the scorching heat of the Sahara in summer.

Terraced farming on the slopes of the Atlas Mountains

The highest point of the Atlas Mountains is Mount Toubkal, lyrically called جبل الذاكرة -Jabal Al-Da'akirah ("Mountain of Remembrance") by the Arabs. What do they remember when gazing at the snow-capped peak, hovering like a mirage at an inaccessible altitude above the scorching sands of the Sahara Desert, remains a mystery.

Perhaps they remember how, thousands of years ago, warlike Berber savages descended from these mountains and plundered Arab caravans and fortresses... But that's just my hypothesis.

An ancient fortress in an oasis in the desert

For us climbers, Toubkal is a relatively easy climb, according to mountaineering classifications, nice enjoyable route to the highest point of the Atlas Mountains with its boasting stunning summit views.

There are no other peaks in the world from which one can admire the sun setting in the hot haze that rises in the evening over the endless sands of the Sahara Desert.

Sunset in the Atlas Mountains from the summit of Toubkal

Toubkal is an ideal weekend climbing solution – there are minimum formalities to enter Morocco, nor acclimatization is necessary for a quick ascent to the altitude 4167 meters. The entire program fits into 5 days.

Climbing Toubkal presents no technical difficulties; reasonable physical fitness and basic hiking skills are sufficient.

Climbing of Toubkal - the route is initial level

The most favorable time for climbing Toubkal is the European winter – during this time, you can reach the summit without suffering from the oppressive heat that covers these mountains from May to October.

Climbing in the summer is also possible, but don't expect beautiful snow or spectacular views along the route – snow cover on Toubkal only forms in winter.
