"Tottenham's home stadium? It's like a nightclub, not a fortress!"...Postecoglou enjoys the atmosphere too

The culture of sounding the victory bell after winning a war is also seen in modern soccer.

This is because every time the home team wins, they play a song and the fans and players enjoy it together. Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou's bone-jarring joke that Tottenham Hotspur's stadium has become a "nightclub" after back-to-back victories is a hot topic.

"Tottenham Hotspur's stadium has become a nightclub, not a fortress," Postecoglou joked in an interview, according to London-based club publication Football London.

Both fans and the club get drunk on victory and have a good time together. Since the club has ties to London, the capital of England, and Son Heung-min, one of the best players South Korea has ever produced, played for Tottenham for nine seasons, there are a lot of Korean tourists.

The Tottenham Hotspur stadium is the newest stadium in London, having opened in April 2019. It's big enough to hold an NFL game or even a Beyoncé concert, so it's not uncommon for a good stadium to turn up the volume and create a festive atmosphere.

Athletes also celebrate victories with songs in the locker room. "I don't know because I don't go into the locker room," Postecoglou said, prompting a laugh. "One of the reasons I don't go into the locker room is because of the songs they play," he said, joking that it's not his cup of tea.

But Postecoglou doesn't think the "nightclubbing" of stadiums is necessarily a bad thing. "Whatever people like, I like," he said, giving a glimpse into the cheerful atmosphere at the club.

Tottenham are currently unbeaten in the league. After a 2-0 win over Fulham in the ninth round of the 2023/24 English Premier League on Sept. 24, Spurs are now top of the league with seven wins and two draws from nine games. Postecoglou also became the first Premier League manager to accumulate 23 points in his first nine games in charge of a Premier League club.

Amid this upswing, talk of Tottenham's league title chances is growing. Spurs have not lifted a trophy since winning the 2007/08 League Cup. The last time they won the top flight was in the 1960/61 season.

Postecoglou is also eager to break Tottenham's streak of irrelevance. "I'm here to succeed at Tottenham," Postecoglou said, "This club has all the foundations to succeed." That means a title for Tottenham is not out of the question.

But Postecoglou's goals for Tottenham are more ambitious. "My biggest motivation for being a manager is not to lift trophies," he said, "it's to fully fulfill the ambitions that this club has right now." The answer seems to be that he doesn't care if the public is talking about winning the title or qualifying for the UEFA Champions League, he wants to achieve what the team wants.

"I'm not worried about what people are saying," Postecoglou said, adding that "the Tottenham team I'm managing now is a team that is capable of lifting trophies every season."

When Postecoglou first arrived at Spurs last summer, he was greeted with a mixture of skepticism and excitement.

He was a manager from soccer's third continent, Australia, who had never managed in the 'big leagues' before, having been in charge of the Australian A-League and Scottish Premiership side Celtic. But the doubters turned to cheers. After a disastrous eighth-place finish last season, conceding the most goals (63) since the 1992/93 season and failing to qualify for Europe, Spurs have turned things around under Postecoglou and are top of the league.

James Maddison, one of Tottenham's key offensive players, also emphasized Postecoglou's charismatic leadership, saying, "He's an 'alpha male,'" and "You can't blink when he's talking in the locker room."

Postecoglou's charisma and warm, joking demeanor are believed to be a breath of fresh air for Spurs, who will look to "sustain" their top spot when they travel to Crystal Palace for a 4 p.m. kickoff on Oct. 28.
