Tottenham Hotspur have a number of positions they need to strengthen in the January transfer window.

The defense suffered three consecutive defeats as soon as Micky Van der Vaart and Christian Romero left the team due to injury and disciplinary reasons, respectively.

In midfield, Rodrigo Bentancur, who returned to the team after a nine-month absence, was knocked out again just as he was beginning to show signs of resurgence for the club after an A-match in November. Attacking midfielder James Maddison, one of the Premier League's top signings last summer, is also out with an ankle injury.

The attack is also bleak.

The club lost its mainstay Harry Kane to Bayern Munich in the last transfer window and hasn't found a suitable replacement. The club tried to use their star striker in the center of the park, but that also fell apart due to the psychological pressure and personal issues he was dealing with. As a result, he has been using winger Son Heung-min up top since the fourth round of the league against Burnley.

So far, Son has scored eight goals in 13 league games and is third in the league in goals scored. That's a very respectable record considering it's his first season as a full-fledged central striker.

The problem is that Son has scored most of his goals, making him an attacking one-man show. The team has a number of other attacking options, including Hicharlison, Brennan Johnson, Manor Solomon, and Dejan Kluczewski, who aren't creating enough goals from the flanks.

Appearing on The View From the Lane, a Tottenham-specific podcast on global sports outlet The Athletic, Tottenham journalist James Mowe argued on Monday that Spurs are relying too much on Son Heung-min.

He was joined by fellow panelists Charlie Eccleshire, who is also a Tottenham journalist, and show host Danny Kelly to discuss which positions Spurs should look to strengthen in the January transfer window. 온라인카지노

Eccleshire and Kelly pointed to midfield and defense as issues, with Tottenham's thin backline as a problem. Currently, Spurs have only Ben Davies and Eric Dier as experienced center backs.

"Tottenham is not at a time when the midfield is like this and the defense is like that," said Mourinho. "I was shocked last Sunday (2023/24 English Premier League Round 13 against Aston Villa). The lack of sharpness in front of goal shocked me."

"Tottenham sold the best striker in the Premier League (Harry Kane) and bought Brennan Johnson," he said. "Of course, Johnson is young and promising and will help Tottenham in the future, but he's too young now."

Moreover, outside of Johnson, the rest of the team has struggled to produce goals. "At this pace, he'll probably only have 10 goals by the end of the season," Mourinho said. "The same goes for Johnson and Manor Solomon (who is currently injured) will score goals when he comes back, but it won't be easy."

Son Heung-min, on the other hand, is flying high. He has scored eight goals, proving the effectiveness of the "nail" tactic. "This is why we need to improve," says Mo, noting that "everyone is looking at Son Heung-min" and that the offense is too reliant on one player.

As a result, even though Son is third in the league in scoring, the team as a whole has scored fewer goals. The teams above Spurs, from first-place Arsenal to fourth-place Aston Villa, have all scored more goals than Spurs. Spurs have scored 25 goals this season. The most prolific team, Man City, has 31 goals.scored.

That's why Mourinho points to the urgency of signing a central striker.

"We need a central striker to replace Kane," he says. "If we can't afford one, we should buy a flanker. We need someone who can take the opposition defenders out of the game (by dribbling) and open up chances."

Spurs, meanwhile, are currently much more heavily linked with defensive options than central strikers. Spurs have been linked with AFC Bournemouth's Lloyd Kelly earlier this month, and Mark Geahy has been linked with a move since the summer.
