In Australia, the ban on social networks is being strengthened

Australia continues to tighten enforcement of the ban on the use of social media by children under the age of 16. Six months after the law came into force, the authorities decided to increase pressure not on users, but on the technology companies themselves.

The government has announced that the maximum fine for systematic violations of the law will double to $68 million. YouTube, Snapchat, TikTok and other platforms are already under investigation.

At the same time, the powers of the Commissioner for Electronic Security (eSafety Commissioner) are being expanded. The regulator will now be able to require platforms to prove what measures they are taking to prevent users under the age of 16 from registering.

However, so far no special results have been seen. According to a study published in the British Medical Journal, three months after the law came into force, 85% of teenagers aged 12 to 15 continued to use social media.

Most minors circumvent the restrictions without much difficulty. It is enough to indicate the age over 16 when registering or to pass an age check using a selfie, which the system mistakes for a photo of an adult user.

The Australian authorities continue to consistently expand digital control mechanisms. And although teenagers still easily circumvent restrictions, in Canberra they are betting not on policy revision, but on increased supervision and pressure on Internet platforms.
