BREAKING NEWS: Tornado Touches Down in Carmel, Indiana – Significant Damage Reported

Carmel, Indiana – May 15, 2025

A powerful tornado swept through Carmel, Indiana, this evening, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. The National Weather Service (NWS) confirmed an EF-2 tornado with estimated winds of 120 mph touched down near 146th Street and Keystone Parkway before moving northeast through residential and commercial areas.

Widespread Damage, Multiple Injuries

Emergency crews are currently assessing the damage, with reports of downed trees, power lines, and structural damage to homes and businesses. Several vehicles were overturned, and at least one gas leak was reported near Main Street, prompting evacuations in the surrounding area.

Carmel Mayor Sue Finkum declared a state of emergency, urging residents to avoid affected zones while first responders conduct search-and-rescue operations. 'Our priority is the safety of our residents. We have activated emergency shelters and are working closely with Hamilton County officials,' Mayor Finkum stated.

Community Response

Local hospitals have treated at least a dozen minor injuries, but no fatalities have been reported so far. The American Red Cross has set up a temporary shelter at Carmel High School for displaced residents.

Power outages are affecting thousands, with Duke Energy estimating restoration could take up to 48 hours in some areas. Residents are advised to stay off the roads as crews work to clear debris.

The NWS warns that additional severe storms, including possible tornadoes, remain a threat for central Indiana overnight. Residents are urged to stay weather-aware and have multiple ways to receive alerts.
