Practical shmactical. Here’s the A-listers who took the ‘go big or go home’ approach to red carpet dressing.
If you wore some of these dresses in real life you’d probably get arrested. But in the red carpet parallel universe, ‘naked’ dresses have become pretty much the norm. Here are some of the boldest.
Did you know that J Lo wearing that green Versace dress all those years ago is the reason Google Images exists? Yep. She was probably just celebrating that fact when she wore this Versace cape as a dress for an InStyle shoot. We imagine.

To be fair, Kim Kardashian is a pro when it comes to naked dresses, but we reckon this is her most daring to date. Imagine eating a pizza in that.
Maybe Gabrielle couldn’t decide whether to pitch up to the Oscars after-party in a long black dress or a bandeau bikini. And why decide when clearly you can wear both at once?
The Kardashian’s are, of course, past masters at both a) strategic red carpet body reveals and b) theming their wardrobes. In this case they’ve both taken an ‘ordinary’ red carpet dress and lopped a big old portion out if it – in Khloe’s case a ‘dress’ that tapers in around the legs and waist, in Kourtney’s one that appears to have been snipped out over the thighs. See how the two dresses also subtly mirror each other in style? These ladies are Kardashians so that’s clearly not an accident – e.g point b).
In general we just really like what Chrissy Teigen is about (see her best moments on Twitter for more details). Very few women could pull a dress like this off, but even fewer – when they realise they’re accidentally flashing the ranks of cameras – would deliver a comedy ‘whoopsy!’ and side-step their way across the step-and-repeat like a cat burglar.
It’s hard to know where this Versace dress ends and Kendall begins, but we love the colour and all that white spaghetti junction detailing. The sort of dress about 0.000001% of the population could pull off.
This is obviously not the first time we’ve seen more of Madonna than we bargained for, but it is possibly the first time we’ve seen her in an outfit inspired by the medical ‘kinesiology tape’ she uses to support her tired muscles on tour (we haven’t made that up by the way, that was the inspiration).
Rita swept into the Met Ball looking like a beautiful metallic bird of paradise. Back in a more demure time ‘daring’ red carpet dresses would sweep low across the back or torso – now they’re very cut to show off the thighs too, which must make moving around without flashing anyone a carefully thought out business.
There are dresses you can’t really have a big dinner in. Then there are dresses you can’t really have any dinner in.
Ciara’s Alexandre Vauthier gown appears to have been cut to ribbons. Luckily, her skin and body is great so she didn’t even need to run to a haberdashers before stepping out onto the red carpet at this year’s Grammys. Though that ‘step forward’ pose she’s doing appears to be extremely necessary as well as flattering.
This writer shudders to think what sort of side-view she would present if she was asked to slip into this see-through Reem Acra number. But then this writer is not Diane Kruger.
It’s tiny. It’s bright orange. It has a tangle of tenuously knotted ropes holding it all together. Few women posess the minerals to step out in something like this. But then of course this is not Rita’s first rodeo…
At the VF Oscars party Rita braved the world’s cameras in this sheer Donna Karan affair. Surely no elaborate M&S multiway could have delivered an underwear solution to this one. Her answer? Lose the undies altogether.
This success of this look is 5% sheer fabric, 5% strategically placed embellishments and 90% double-sided tape and hope. Being Beyonce, she’s gone for death or glory in Givenchy and worked this one from every possible angle.
The #FreeTheNipple campaigner presents a pretty solid case here. We love the glittery 1920s headgear.
This almost-doesn’t-qualify-as-a-dress dress (which appears to come with built in tights? How does she pee?) is very similar to the one Rita Ora wore to the same party on the same night. We like to imagine they saw each other, LOLed heartily and took a joint picture.

This is Small Banana Beach, a popular nude beach on the Greek island of Skiathos. This beautiful and secluded beach is located right next to the neighboring Big Banana Beach. The two beaches are seperated by a small rocky outcrop.
Naturism is still really popular in Greece and most of Europe, so beaches like this are common. Only a few beaches are designated "nude" beaches, but topless is legal everywhere. That's why there were a few topless women on the neighboring Big Banana Beach, and the nearby Koukounaries Beach.
I was actualy looking at pictures of this beach, and everyone had clothes on, so i wasn't expecting to see any nudists, but almost everyone on the beach was naked. Mostly older people, but a few young people as well. But most of the young people were on the neighboring Big Beach.
I felt a little awkward with clothes on, so I stripped down as well and went skinny dipping.
It was very hard to find an empty spot. There were people everywhere!
These two beaches are twins to Big and Little Makena Beach on Maui.

Gümbet Beach - The beach is the reason for Gümbet's existence, a curving kilometre or so of sand that is lined the whole way with hotels, bars & restaurants, all of whom put out sunbeds & umbrellas that are free to use as long as you keep drinking.
Waiters run up and down the beach to serve you while a little further out, grown men in lobster pink are falling off banana boats & ringos. The more adventurous can try windsurfing, jet skiing & paragliding. There is an official topless beach a short distance out of town (not something normally permitted in Turkey).

I recently scanned a series of slides taken in 1979 when M and our twins came with me on a university diving club trip to Cornwall. Nothing very artistic, just a snippet of our life.
After a beach dive, M is able to relax for a while while I am looking after the twins – and appreciating the nice look of her rather minimal bikini (this was way before the thong style became accepted).

The history of the bikini can be traced back to antiquity. Illustrations of Roman women wearing bikini-like garments during competitive athletic events have been found in several locations. The most famous of them is Villa Romana del Casale. French engineer Louis Réard introduced the modern bikini, modeled by Micheline Bernardini, on July 5, 1946, borrowing the name for his design from the Bikini Atoll, where post-war testing on the atomic bomb was happening.
French women welcomed the design, but the Catholic Church, some media, and a majority of the public initially thought the design was risque or even scandalous. Contestants in the first Miss World beauty pageant wore them in 1951, but the bikini was then banned from the competition. Actress Bridget Bardot drew attention when she was photographed wearing a bikini on the beach during the Cannes Film Festival in 1953. Other actresses, including Rita Hayworth and Ava Gardner, also gathered press attention when they wore bikinis. During the early 1960's, the design appeared on the cover of Playboy and Sports Illustrated, giving it additional legitimacy. Ursula Andress made a huge impact when she emerged from the surf wearing what is now an iconic bikini in the James Bond movie Dr. No (1962). The deer skin bikini Raquel Welch wore in the film One Million Years B.C. (1966) turned her into an international sex symbol and was described as a definitive look of the 1960's.
The bikini gradually grew to gain wide acceptance in Western society. According to French fashion historian Olivier Saillard, the bikini is perhaps the most popular type of female beachwear around the globe because of "the power of women, and not the power of fashion". As he explains, "The emancipation of swimwear has always been linked to the emancipation of women." By the early 2000's, bikinis had become a US $ 811 million business annually, and boosted spin-off services like bikini waxing and the sun tanning.
In the Chalcolithic era around 5600 BC, the mother-goddess of Çatalhöyük, a large ancient settlement in southern Anatolia, was depicted astride two leopards wearing a costume somewhat like a bikini. Two-piece garments worn by women for athletic purposes are depicted on Greek urns and paintings dating back to 1400 BC. Active women of ancient Greece wore a breastband called a mastodeton or an apodesmos, which continued to be used as an undergarment in the Middle Ages. While men in ancient Greece abandoned the perizoma, partly high-cut briefs and partly loincloth, women performers and acrobats continued to wear it.
Artwork dating back to the Diocletian period (286-305 AD) in Villa Romana del Casale, Sicily, excavated by Gino Vinicio Gentile in 1950-60, depicts women in garments resembling bikinis in mosaics on the floor. The images of ten women, dubbed the "Bikini Girls", exercising in clothing that would pass as bikinis today, are the most replicated mosaic among the 37 million colored tiles at the site. In the artwork "Coronation of the Winner" done in floor mosaic in the Chamber of the Ten Maidens (Sala delle Dieci Ragazze in Italian) the bikini girls are depicted weight-lifting, discus throwing, and running. Some activities depicted have been described as dancing, as their bodies resemble dancers rather than athletes. Coronation in the title of the mosaic comes from a woman in a toga with a crown in her hand and one of the maidens holding a palm frond. Some academics maintain that the nearby image of Eros, the primordial god of lust, love, and intercourse, was added later, demonstrating the owner's predilections and strengthening the association of the bikini with the erotic. Similar mosaics have been discovered in Tellaro in northern Italy and Patti, another part of Sicily. Prostitution, skimpy clothes and athletic bodies were related in ancient Rome, as images were found of female sex workers exercising with dumbbells/clappers and other equipment wearing costumes similar to the Bikini Girls.
