Should earth or water match with air? In Avatar the Last Airbender, Aang could be with either Toph or Katara...
It has been more than twelve years since the final episode of Avatar: The Last Airbender aired (no pun intended). Still, a big part of the fanbase is still tossing in their beds every night thinking what could have been had the showrunners decided to pair Zuko and Katara instead . For that matter, another more obvious pairing choice would be Aang and Toph... and then Sokka and Boomerang, but that's a topic for another time.
This is all about Aang, because unlike the more clear-cut "Zutara" pairing, Aang goes well with both Toph and Katara. It's quite polarizing too since both of them have good chemistry with him. Hence, here we are, weighing in the options and asking the hard questions even though it's been more than a decade, is Toph better for Aang than Katara? Or vice versa?
Air and water go together like peanut butter and jelly, but anyone would rather have peanut butter with bread than scarf down that legume paste with just jelly. That's what earth is, bread. Whereas Aang is evasive and soft, Toph is confrontational and tough.
The elements they bend also best represent their personality-- earth is tangible and solid, air is invisible and untenable. Together they complement each others' weaknesses and make them an unstoppable power couple. Sounds like something Azula might say but as the old saying goes, opposites attract.
Katara has been around ever since Aang unfroze and worked hard to earn his trust as well as his friendship. They've been through more life-threatening situations together and have known each other longer than Toph has been around.
That's why it's more plausible for Aang to end up with Toph compared to Katara. Both have bonded through thick and thin already and accepted each others' strengths and weaknesses when they didn't need to out of duty.
Toph has a reputation in both The Last Airbender and even in The Legend of Korra for being undefeated or nigh-invincible on solid ground. In fact, one of the few people who defeated her is Aang due to his elusive airbending antics.
So it stands within reason that Toph should respect Aang the moment they met. After all, he did defeat her fair and square in a match, just not with earthbending. Toph even took the defeat like a champ and knowing her, the post-battle grumpiness was just a way to show respect.
Team Avatar would be nothing without Katara. She's essentially the glue that held them together despite all that has happened. Katara is their most mature member and she set Aang in the right path.
Truth be told, Aang would probably not have completed his Avatar transformation if not for Katara's guidance. Of the two, she's the more responsible figure and that also went well with Aang's carefree personality back then. Or it could be just an age gap thing...
Katara is 14 and Aang is technically 112 but psychologically and biologically just 12. That age gap during that period of puberty is significant. Meanwhile, Toph is the same age and stage of growth as Aang. That's what makes their interactions more fun.
Both of them are on the same wavelength due to their age and enjoy youthful carelessness and conceit. Katara is more strict and rigid compared to Toph in The Last Airbender time period. In any case, the age and mindset are two default things that both Toph and Aang already have in common.
Aang is a child who was given a huge responsibility and understands his destiny as the Avatar. Katara is a strong girl who took over the matriarchal role of her family and her tribe when her parents died. Together, these two have accomplished a lot especially considering they're just kids.
Team Avatar did manage to save the world but it was mostly Aang and Katara's efforts that made it possible, especially in Book 1. It's hard to imagine Toph achieving the same with Aang if she were in Katara's place.
With that said, the age difference as well as Katara's disposition to be overprotective and stern makes her more like a mother figure to Aang. Sokka said it best when he claimed that it was Katara who raised the family and that he can't even recall their true mother's face anymore because of her sister's care.
Toph, on the other hand, didn't undergo the same harsh upbringing as Katara did and was more youthful in her actions. She doesn't fit in a particular parental or guiding role for Aang (apart from earthbending teacher ) which is great for separating work and fun.
The cold hard truth is that the Avatar line would have been prematurely snuffed out if not for Katara. It was she who saved Aang from the iceberg, convinced him to fulfill his duty, and stood by his side through it all. Katara did that without expecting anything in return or any gratification.
Oh, and one simply doesn't forget how many times Katara has saved Aang from certain death. Without her, Azula's lightning could have killed Aang on the spot. Her healing powers were also instrumental to Team Avatar's success.
Katara being a motherly figure to Aang sometimes might have hindered his growth as a person. This was especially apparent when Aang was learning firebending and earthbending where she was mostly there to console Aang in his failures.
Toph, however, was more direct; she knew Aang's temperament in combat and wanted him to try harder and step out of his comfort zone. For an Avatar, this was a crucial lesson to learn in order for them to grow. As such, it's another complimentary quality of Toph when it comes to Aang's nature. It would be interesting to see how he would have developed as an adult Avatar if he ended up with her.
With all that's been said and done, the die has already been cast and the showrunners deemed it worthy for Aang to end up with Katara. It's what's canon and everything else is just speculative fanfiction. Thankfully, it wasn't that big of a crime to the fanbase compared to poor Zuko and Mai.
After all, based on the previous points raised, Katara had about as much chemistry with Aang as Toph. Besides, it was practically set up from the beginning of the franchise. It's also great to see how well their relationship blossomed in Legend of Korra.
