Top Gun: Maverick star Glen Powell opens up about working with his idol Tom Cruise. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell is back in the skies in the long-awaited sequel to 1986’s blockbuster Top Gun. And even though the actor is about to turn 60, Cruise is still pushing the envelope as the iconic Naval aviator with a need for speed.
Cruise’s Maverick to take a backseat in Top Gun 2 given the character’s age. But Cruise clearly had other ideas as the movie sees Pete Mitchell still breaking rules and getting on the nerves of his superiors after all these years. The past is about to catch up with Maverick however, as the Top Gun sequel sees him coming face-to-face with Rooster Bradshaw (Miles Teller), the son of his late co-pilot Goose. And there are other new characters set to hit the skies with Maverick in Top Gun 2 as well, including Powell as trainee pilot Lieutenant Jake "Hangman" Seresin. Never one to go easy when it comes to realism, Cruise naturally made sure all his new co-stars were in flying shape prior to appearing in Top Gun 2, putting them through a veritable boot camp while also getting them acclimated to real flying in real fighter jets. For his part, Powell seemed to enjoy the entire process of entering Cruise’s super-intense action-hero world, and indeed acknowledges how important Cruise was in inspiring his whole career as an actor. Tom Cruise is one of the reasons I wanted to get into acting. So many pilots became pilots because of Top Gun, and so many actors became actors because of Tom Cruise in this film. There is a moment when you’re on set standing next to Tom Cruise next to a F-18 jet wearing aviators where you think, “This is as good as it gets.” It was such an out-of-body experience.
Hangman as played by Powell in Top Gun: Maverick, outside of the fact that he's a trainee pilot and likes a good game of shirtless beach football. However, at least one fan theory holds that Jake Seresin is actually Maverick’s secret son. It would certainly be a soap opera twist for Maverick’s son to show up in the Top Gun sequel, and have him coincidentally also be an aspiring Navy pilot. But considering that the movie already deals with Goose’s son, having another son of an original character show up might be pushing things a little too far. Whatever role Hangman turns out to play in Top Gun: Maverick, it seems Powell was genuinely tickled by the experience of sharing the screen with his idol Cruise. It remains to be seen if audiences are as excited to see Cruise back in the skies as Maverick again, but early reviews seem to promise that the movie is a more-than-worthy successor to 1986’s blockbuster original. And if Top Gun: Maverick proves to be a hit at the box office, maybe Powell and and his idol Cruise will be in for a reunion in Top Gun 3.
