Tommy Edman Makes History as First Korean-American to Hit for the Cycle in MLB

St. Louis, MO — May 15, 2024 — St. Louis Cardinals' utility star Tommy Edman etched his name into the baseball history books last night, becoming the first Korean-American player in Major League Baseball to hit for the cycle. Edman’s remarkable performance led the Cardinals to a dominant 9-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs at Busch Stadium.

The 28-year-old switch-hitter accomplished the feat in style, starting with a triple in the 1st inning, followed by a double in the 3rd, a single in the 5th, and finally capping it off with a solo home run in the 7th. The crowd erupted as Edman rounded the bases, and his teammates mobbed him at home plate in celebration.

'It's an incredible feeling,' Edman said postgame. 'I’m proud to represent my Korean heritage and to do it in front of our fans makes it even more special.' Edman, whose mother is Korean, has been a standout player for the Cardinals since his debut in 2019, known for his versatility, speed, and clutch hitting.

Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol praised Edman’s all-around contribution: 'Tommy does it all—defense, offense, base running. Tonight was just another example of how impactful he is.'

With the cycle, Edman joins an elite group of Cardinals players to achieve the feat, the first since Mark Grudzielanek in 2005. Social media buzzed with congratulations, including from South Korean baseball fans, who celebrated the milestone for one of MLB’s most prominent Asian-American stars.

Edman’s historic night adds another highlight to what’s shaping up to be a career year, further solidifying his role as a key piece in the Cardinals' playoff push.
