Tom Ford Noir: Black Is Always Appropriate Fragrance Reviews

I wonder what's your definition of "super old fragrances"? :)
Somehow none of the Noir trio ended up a big like for me, nothing like my expectations, but I keep trying with them from time to time. I find the three other mentioned Noir-named fragrances way more exciting, but then they are also much more expensive. Strange how this doesn't remind me to beloved Shalimar at all.
I own and love TF Noir EDP. If I’m not mistaken, the EDP is still available, while Noir EDT, in the frosted bottle, appears to have become as rare as a unicorn.
A beautiful powdery gothic scent. Foggy days are the best for this. Grew on me a lot.
I like TF Noir. But the performance is weak. It starts with wonderful rose-animalic combo then after an hour or so it dries down to a faint powdery scent. Could have been one of my favourites if those top notes lasted longer
I thought I read Noir was discontinued in the black bottle Eau de Parfum version and the frosted bottle Eau de Toilette version was retained? Unless that was wrong what I heard.
I enjoyed your review Sergey.
Noir is my favourite from TF, it smells wonderfully mysterious and feminine to me. I believe it's discontinued, I've many backups as I adore this scent, it is irreplaceable.
Just curious why review such random super old fragrances?
Great write up, Thank you. Funny this pops up today, as last night I wore Tom Ford Noir for the first time in ages (maybe more than a year ago). It is a really beautiful scent....soft, warm, spiced and gentle. For being a Tom Ford and with the name Noir; wow it is weak. I can smell it when I spray it (albeit softly) and I I press my nose into my arm or wrist, but that it is. I even put a few sprays on my shirt, and those were mostly gone in a few hours. My Tom Ford Vanille Fatale, Tobacco Vanille, Lost Cherry, Bitter Peach....they last almost all day on me and easily 24+ hours on clothes.

Angels Share is an absolute dream. I am instantly in love. It is an extremely well balanced cinnamon spiced, sweet, boozy scent. It gives everything you want it to give from the notes listed, without becoming cloyingly sweet, overly boozy, or headache inducing. Instead, it is a gorgeous gourmand....
I...kinda love this? It's really earthy on my skin from the start-- like freshly tilled dirt. The osmanthus is dry and leathery here, not juicy and peachy. There's not an ounce of sweetness on my skin until well into the dry down when the amber peeks through a bit and the fruitier...
I've smelled all the editions in their bottles and could only stomach this one enough to spray it. Not a start to finish like. But there's something here. Midphase, it smells like a hospital/nurse. It has that rubbery leather thang going on in Dzing but only a tease, to modernize its...
What can I say about H24 that hasn't already been said below? Not much, but I'll simplify my thoughts on this fragrance into the following statement: - A clean white shirt being ironed. I don't even need to mention notes after that sentence but to elaborate; imagine a clean fabric...
didn't get the caramel. got the general "masc" aromaticness that dominates men's perfumery and not much else. it's fine though
Got a sample, here are my sporadic thoughts: Opening is wonderful. very fresh and prominent with citrus, afterwards becomes overtly sweet for me, like boiling cheap synthetic honey. Way too floral. Mellow down: There is a particular earthy, nutty note here that my senses despise. I'm new to...
For someone who loves jasmine, this is a nice option. To me however it smells grandma-ish and outdated. It’s creamy jasmine throughout and it lasts forever.
An office for men clone which is already a smoothie of aventus and sauvage with some hints from the opening of bleu de chanel The clone is perfect though
strong amber & incense. not super different from barkhane to me
jasmine. i didnt get the salt, but this smells very airy and open florals.
interesting! idk what orris smells like in its raw form so this smelled kind of like tea to me.
For me the sweetness level is moderate, it could be more sweeter for me. I don't really detect a "realistic" marshmallow smell when I spray it, I can smell a creamy or slightly lactonic note that is sweet (maybe the marshmallow note), the orange makes it fresh and airy, the vanilla...
darker, stronger coffee scent. ambery spices
Love at 1st, but then something goes a bit amiss on my clothes. Still like it but the 1st spray is the deepest. How did that song go?
People don't really smell perfume anymore, they smell marketing.
This article was so evocative, I had to go apply some of my own L'HB EdT. I always associate the scent with Easter, not with paintings (but Chagall, I stared at that part of your article the longest, wonderful pairing. It always seems people don't think the work is "pretty...
A truly wonderful and evocative review, Elena. Thank you.
This week’s horoscope feels really relevant! Thank you
Is it just me or it really does look like a cheap Coty fragrance with nothing groundbreaking when it comes to bottle.
I also thought this was a well written and thoughtful article, and I always enjoy Elena's usual positivity in her reviews. I often complain about imaginative bottle design (because usually fanciful bottles are glitzy and tacky), but this one strikes me as tasteful and appealing.
Luca Turin praised that ingredient for its complexity and super effects, so I am sure it is a remarkable compound. Nomenclature’s concept is a bit different from Geza’s, they use a molecule as a part of a very complex composition, and all their perfumes are really good.
I wonder what gardenia & marshmallow would smell like!
Scent of my kitties bellyfur. They both smell different. The smell of horses but mostly the saddle room. Horse sweat, old leather and years of hard work. The air before it rains, a new pair of leather shoes that have been worn once or twice and sweated into. Petrol cars, both running and standing...
60's kitch/ whimsy is generally not an aesthetic that immediately appeals to me but I LOVE the bottles in this range! It manages to be colorful and playful without giving the impression that it's targeted at 4 year olds. As for the notes, I can see the pear and pink pepper overpowering...
Superb. Both this article and Rouge. Thank you, Matvey and CdG!
Not common brand in the UK. Actually fact, I haven't seen them since House of Fraser closed down. I tried Harrods and Selfridges, they don't know anything about it.
there is only one 'Red'. Gale and Fred Hayman Giorgio Beverly Hills: "RED'. 'wearing 'Red', everything else pales'.
meanwhile, I got an email from Senyoko team with some explanation: "Our original idea was the metaphor of unrequited love between 2 parties (races, genders, religions, sexual orientations, social stratifications etc.) They are just like the sun and shadow that never overlap. Normally at the...
I am dying to try anything from the Guerlain Les Legendaires collection but now I'm specifically interested in Apres L'Ondee! With apologies to those who liked it, the most recent version left a lot to be desired. Having never sampled the original or any earlier versions, my hope is...
@karadanvers: sorry to ask, but in what world do you live? There are plenty of (major) fragrance houses (mostly niche/indie - thus usually high quality) founded by women, starting with Chanel, and many others like Annick Goutal, Miller Harris, Perfumer H, Andree Putman, Anat Fritz, Mona di Orio,...
I liked their simply Olibanum perfume – rich incense perfume.
Toy Boy doesn't smell anything at all to me like what Eddie B describes here which goes to show how subjective one's experience of a fragrance is. Because of this, I'm never shocked when two reviews of the same fragrance say the opposite things anymore.
Funny that this thread popped up today as I wore Olympic Orchids Blackbird yesterday. For me I can’t think of a more realistic representation of blackberries plus all the plant matter: leaves, vines and ramble. I can smell the thorns—even the juice is purple. Olympic Orchids is running their 20%...
Tom Ford has made impressive strides in the last couple of decades. His perfume brand Tom Ford has become one of the most popular and most talked about in the world. But what do we usually discuss? The news, the provocative names, and the rare, discontinued fragrances!
At the same time, wonderful fragrances like Tom Ford Noir , released in 2012, remain in the shadow of the famous and more expensive Private Blend Collection fragrances. Yes, it's "just" a fragrance from the Tom Ford Signature Collection ... but isn't it a fragrance whose face was Tom Ford himself?
I think that the name is just too simple for Tom Ford. In the English version of Tom Ford Black , the name would remind too many of Henry Ford's favorite color ("the color of the car can be anything, as long as the color is black").
But the French word Noir … I immediately recall noir detective stories, with their suspense and hopelessness, French elegance, femme fatales in little black dresses, red lips with a black mouthpiece… And for some reason, ostrich feathers dyed in mourning black. On the other hand, there is still room for growth in the noir genre, and Tom Ford used it – the exotic Sahara Noir and Japon Noir, the superlatives of Noir Extreme and Noir de Noir.
Usually black-noir fragrances give out something more sweet and oriental, or accented towards a dark amber-woody and dense base. In the case of darkness, I found for myself that Noir is some kind of oxymoron. Yes, it is oriental amber, but very easy going, almost transparent and spicy.
For me, Tom Ford Noir does not feel like black, but like a very light, almost white, soft powdery scent with the characteristic warmth of an amber accord in the sillage (albeit in a black polished bottle). Spices, fluffy iris powder, warm violet and transparent amber based on patchouli and fragrant resins… It reminds me of something…
Yes, that's right, Violet Blonde Tom Ford! It's amazing what a harmonious pair in the vintage style they make up! Tom Ford Noir is often compared to Guerlain's soft oriental fragrances – with good reason, and I agree with the comparisons. You can choose for yourself which one: Heritage, Habit Rouge, or Shalimar, Noir reminds you more.
Just as Violet Blonde for women seems to be a modern take on L'Heure Bleue, Tom Ford Noir for men shares many of the characteristics of Guerlain fragrances, mentioned above. I wonder if it was even meant to be? Or is it a spontaneous decision by perfumer Olivier Gillotin ?
The violet sister's sibling has the peppy spicy character of today's refreshing masculine fougères, and the geranium heart of fougere makes him look much younger than his jasmine-violet-hearted sister, who strives to look grown-up. But after that start – soft violet and iris, vanilla and benzoin – everything is soft and fluffy, and in a word – cat. And with a subtle touch of feminine cosmetics. It's dark part is only patchouli, wrapped in a soft amber balsamic accord, and powdered well. It seems to be the perfect example of a fragrance that would work for both going out in black tuxedo and home binge-watching in cosy pajamas.
For some reason, the Tom Ford Noir fragrance is not available for purchase on the official website of the brand right now. However, its stock is still available in many online stores and online auctions, as Eau de Parfum in bottles of 50 and 100 ml.
Top notes: Violet, Pink pepper, Cumin, Bergamot and Verbena; Middle notes: Tuscan iris, Bulgarian rose, Black pepper, Nutmeg, Geranium and Clary sage; Base notes: Indonesian patchouli, Amber, Vanilla, Civet, Leather, Styrax, Opoponax, Benzoin and Vetiver.
