Tokyo Ghoul's Ken Kaneki is the protagonist of the series, but given Touka Kirishima's development, fans could argue she's the main character.
Ken Kaneki is the main protagonist of Tokyo Ghoul . We follow him as he begins to discover the truths of the ghoul world and learns to deal with his new place in that world.
But the series also spends a lot of time with Touka Kirishima, who has her own story arcs and back story, and we witness her character develop as we follow her throughout the series. One could make an argument that Touka is as much the main character of the anime as Kaneki is. Here are five ways we think Touka Kirishima is the protagonist of Tokyo Ghoul and five ways that it really is Ken Kaneki.
One of the big ways that a character in an anime , or any series really, gets to show growth is to have an emotional story arc, where the character learns something about how they behave or view things and adjusts their philosophy about it with new information or by getting to know a character who changes their views. Touka is a pretty cold and ruthless character when we meet her. This is a defense mechanism against the dangers of losing the people she loves. But as she spends time with Kaneki, she learns that she doesn’t have to be that defensive and that she can show kindness alongside her protectiveness over her loved ones.
This is another main characteristic of a shonen protagonist. Ken Kaneki, who was as a human a pretty meek and shy person, is pretty powerful as a ghoul. That means that he has the ability to take care of people in a way he wasn’t able to when he was a human. Plus, his world is now a lot more dangerous than it used to be. His determination to use his newfound powers to protect his friends and the people he cares about is pretty good evidence that we’re supposed to consider him the protagonist.
Young main characters often have coming of age moments, some of which are more traumatic than others. When Touka is young, her father is killed and her family is torn apart. This leads to her feeling real hatred toward humans, who she thinks are responsible for her father’s death. Her determination and strength, as well as her ruthlessness, all stem from the fear of losing other people she loves, which she feels because of her father’s death. Having this defining moment makes Touka a pretty solid candidate as a protagonist.
Similarly to Touka, Kaneki’s mother died when he was young. While her death wasn’t as traumatic, it still has left Kaneki with scars regarding losing people he cares about. It’s defined him in a different way, making him a person who’s more meek and careful.
But this event has also allowed him to see the importance of becoming strong enough to hold onto the people that he loves and to make sure that they’re taken care of and kept safe. The things about Kaneki’s experience that make him different from Touka also make him a really good protagonist of the series.
When Touka and her sister are attacked as children, Touka suddenly activates her kagune, allowing her to defend them both and to kill her attackers. Being this kind of prodigy is often a sign that a character is a protagonist. As often as the characters are in situations like Kaneki’s, where they’re thrown into a world they’re not familiar with, there are also the characters who just live in those spaces and have grown up learning the rules of the world, who are also interesting to spend time with. This is also a great kind of character to follow to learn about the world.
We’ve mentioned before that Kaneki starts out the series as a pretty meek and shy person. It takes awhile for him to build up the confidence and the power to feel like he can take care of the people around him with his newfound powers.
But more than that, after a run-in with a more powerful ghoul, Kaneki becomes even more powerful and confident, feeling less like he should be protecting people with compassion and more like he needs to crush his enemies in order to save the people he loves. This is a great turning point for him as a character and a strong character moment, something we get specifically from main characters.
We always like to have a strong and powerful main character who’s able to achieve things that the other characters in the series don’t quite have the capabilities to do. Touka is an incredibly powerful ghoul, as we know from the fact that she is able to activate her kagune so young. She’s in a lot of situations where she has to show this kind of power, both to defend herself and to show us the ways she’s growing as a character, learning to use her power to take care of the people around her.
There is a big difference between Kaneki and Touka in the ways their characters are presented in the series. While Touka has a major story arc, starting with her understanding of the world and the way she experiences it because of her childhood trauma, that is her only character arc as she slowly learns to open up and trust people and be kinder to people.
Kaneki, on the other hand, has several character arcs that follow larger story arcs, allowing him the opportunity to change as a character. Each time he changes, the status quo is upset, which would only happen with a main protagonist.
Being a love interest for Kaneki alone wouldn’t necessarily make a good argument for Touka to be the protagonist. In fact, it would be a pretty solid argument for her not being the protagonist. But in a lot of anime, the female love interest of a main character is pretty meek and passive. She isn’t usually the one who steps forward to declare feelings, waiting instead for the male protagonist to be ready. But Kirishima tells Kaneki how she feels about him, loudly and publicly, which makes a pretty good argument that she’s the one taking the protagonist’s step in their relationship.
A big trope of these types of shonen anime is that usually the main character is a normal person with a normal life, going to school, hanging out with friends, until suddenly something happens that launches them into another world or another reality. Ken Kaneki has exactly this happen. He’s suddenly transported into the ghoul world when a ghoul’s spirit is transported into his body and turns him into a ghoul himself. The entire series exists because of this inciting incident, which is a pretty solid argument that Kaneki is the main character.
