Toilet Restoration (Before and After)

Toilet Restoration (Before and After)

How do you spruce up a mid-century a paneled room? Properly, the first step is actually to grab it all aside!

Only a little background: this room is certainly one of four that we did not color or otherwise update after buying the house (the the others are generally bathrooms and the kitchen). It was once a very stereotypical, retro-tastic wood-paneled room. But at some point, someone painted it. And then some other people painted it yet another half-dozen occasions following that. The final fur was bright, and each time it got cool, the panels developed, causing major ugly dark gaps.

Time for a DIY den makeover!

However, it had been a bit beyond people to reel the paint - sooner or later, someone applied some kind of previous college, crazy-glue-infused-caulk to try to fill the gaps. Actually if we spent the months and months to obtain all of the paint out of all the grooves, the caulk would nevertheless be there obvious out at us.Karndean in Peterborough

We also didn't think we could eliminate the walls completely, because the surfaces are unique and the surfaces aren't, thus, the surfaces go underneath the cut, new ground, and new quarter-round that is hiding the ends of the newest floor. Unless we were willing to cope with whatever sure-to-be-lovely shocks that may be lurking below our completely passable new floor, we could not eliminate the paneling.

But we were not rather prepared to include the gazillionth layer of color on the paneling, either. All things considered, how could we hide the fractures that kind at vision stage without painting all of the walls black? Also, the locations was in support of stripes. I've to state I was really against the thought of a hundreds of striped room, but the rest of the major design decisions in the house were my some ideas, and I need my husband to learn his needs count. Certainly there was a compromise found, if we thought about it enough.

The concept we developed to produce every one pleased was to use the prevailing panel as wainscoting, cutting the surfaces about 36" down the floor, eliminating the timber over 36", holding drywall up in their position, and concluding it off with chair rails. I think the outcome is going to be quite attractive, in keeping with our house's type, and a marked improvement over the previous look.

But first we (Adam) had plenty of perform to accomplish. Chopping the walls, eliminating the old panels, insulating the outside wall, and hanging drywall (with support from his dad).

Adam also mounted a brand new electrical plug to energy our pcs within their new, post-makeover location.

Next, we mudded and sanded (and mudded and sanded and mudded and sanded) the newest walls. Most of the space took two units, some parts three, and one really tough place needed four rounds. So much dust! Positive thing we installed plastic in the doorways to keep the dust in check. Also then we've some added cleaning to complete as it wafts or gets followed through the house.

Now that we are done ruining the area, and have the newest bones set up, it's time and energy to beautify this media room/gaming room/library that individuals contact the den. Next on the to-do number is holding trim, painting the wainscoting and new drywall, and putting the chair rail. We're also introducing ceiling-height rack all the way around the area, as part of a room purpose and format makeover - but more on that within the next post!

Enjoyment benefit:

We discovered a nifty old matchbook from the late 50s roughly hidden in the wall. The phone number was just two words and four figures in days past! Exactly what a good little local history.
