This is not a picture of a porn star but is rather that of a Colorado river toad (bufo alvarius). ... It’s not every day that you see the words “porn star”, “toad venom”, and “mystic ritual” together. But here it is.
Various news outlets such as The Guardian and the BBC have reported on the arrest of Nacho Vidal, who is a porn star from Spain, and two others (people not necessarily porn stars). Spanish police are connecting the three to the death of Spanish fashion photographer Jose Luis Abad, after Abad had inhaled dehydrated toad venom. This had reportedly occurred during a mystic ritual performed in July 2019 at Vidal’s house. For those who can’t quite place who Vidal is, this Tweet from @WardieJerusalem offered another distinguishing feature:
Oh, that’s right, he’s the person selling aromatic candles shaped like male genitalia on twitter.
Now all of this may raise many questions such as how many dates do you have to have until you unveil your genitalia-shaped aromatic candle collection and why are people inhaling dehydrated toad venom? Well, the answer to the first question is at least more than one date. The answer to the second question is 5-MeO-DMT.

“5-MeO-DMT” may look like the sound from a cat but actually stands for 5-methoxy-N,N-dimethyltryptamine. It’s a substance that can be isolated by dehydrating the venom from the Sonoran Desert toad, otherwise known as Bufo alvarius. There are other sources such as various plants but the toad origin has led to its nickname being “The Toad.” Why would anyone take “The Toad” via snorting, injection, or smoking? Well, former heavyweight boxing champ Mike Tyson described its psychedelic effects in the interview on ESPN :
5-MeO-DMT is related to DMT, which is mentioned in the video, but is reportedly more potent and offers a somewhat different experience.
As you can see, Tyson used the term “mind-blowing,” which is typically reserved for something quite different. You don’t tend to say, “that was a mind-blowing piece of cabbage.” Indeed, Tyson said that his life “totally changed” or perhaps “toad-ally changed” after using The Toad.
Tyson is not the only one who has described taking 5-MeO-DMT as a spiritual-in-nature experience. According to an article in Johns Hopkins Magazine by Brennen Jensen , people have called it “a powerful, mystical experience—a feeling of pure awareness, of freedom from self-limitations, and of a bond with something greater. Many refer to the drug's effects as ineffable, literally, indescribable in words. For some, perception of time, vision, and sound can be distorted. And then, in less than an hour, the trip is over, leaving its users with a new, mood-altering perspective on their lives.”
Yeah, this sounds a bit different from something you encounter every day, such as your average Zoom call. Sure Zoom calls can distort the perception of time, vision, and sound. But Zoom calls don’t bind to serotonin receptors like 5-MeO-DMT does. Serotonin is neurotransmitter in your body that can affect a variety of different functions, ranging from your bowel movements to your sleep to your mood. So it is not too surprising that 5-MeO-DMT can have psychedelic effects and cause hallucinations. As a publication in the journal Current Drug Metabolism described , the effects start about 3 to 4 minutes after taking 5-MeO-DMT, peak approximately 35 to 40 minutes later, and then end after about 60 to 70 minutes.
Since activating serotonin receptors may affect your mood, some researchers have been exploring whether 5-MeO-DMT may help with depression and anxiety. For example, as described by a publication in the American Journal of Drug and Alcohol Abuse , an anonymous web-based survey that got responses from 362 people found that 41% of those who had been diagnosed with depression reported improvements in their condition as did 80% of those who had been diagnosed with anxiety following 5-MeO-DMT use. Of course, an anonymous web-based survey can only tell you so much.
A study published in Psychopharmacology went a little further, but not a lot further. It checked in with 42 study participants within 24 hours and four weeks after a single inhalation of 5-MeO-DMT vapor. The study participants had increased ratings when it came to measuring satisfaction with life, mindfulness, and convergent thinking and decreased ratings for depression, anxiety, and stress. This wasn’t exactly a randomized controlled trial and four weeks is not the longest follow-up. So you can’t yet conclude anything about the possibility of using 5-MeO-DMT as a treatment.
In fact, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) still considers 5-MeO-DMT a Schedule I controlled substance . That mean’s that it’s illegal to manufacture, buy, possess, or distribute this substance. There is still no approved medical use of The Toad. Plus, the DEA ruling from December 20, 2010 stated that, “There have been reports of emergency room admissions and a death associated with the abuse of 5-MeO-DMT.” It also indicated that 5-MeO-DMT has “a high potential for abuse” because “behavioral effects of 5-MeO-DMT in animals and humans were found to be similar to those of the schedule I hallucinogens.”
Therefore, until more scientific studies are done, don’t assume that there is a “safe level” of 5-MeO-DMT to take. And a scientific study means something that gets peer-reviewed and published in a reputable scientific journal. Not just someone saying, “I told you” or even “I Toad you” that it’s safe.
