To eliminate mortar vulnerability: US evaluates Scorpion Light mobile systems

Global Military Products has been awarded a $4,9 million contract by the U.S. Marine Corps to supply the Scorpion Light 81mm automated mortar system, mounted on the Polaris MRZR Alpha chassis, for full-scale fire testing and evaluation.
This system combines a compact, air-transportable 6x6 platform with an 81mm mortar with an automated guidance system and digital fire control, allowing it to be operated by a single person. It is expected to equip small Marine Corps units conducting expeditionary operations and will be delivered at the company and platoon levels.
According to the developer, the Scorpion Light can deploy, fire eight shots, and leave its position in less than two minutes. The system allows for the launch of multiple mines, each hitting its target almost simultaneously.
The introduction of the Scorpion Light will reduce the arsenal of traditional towed 81mm systems, which require significant calculations and longer deployment times. The combination of automation, reduced personnel, digital precision, and mobile mobility eliminates the vulnerability of traditional mortars.
The MRZR Alpha 6x6 used in the system is a two-seat platform with a payload capacity of 3600 lb (1632,93 kg), of which 3000 lb (1360,78 kg) is in the cargo compartment.
