The perfect books to read from a hammock.
You can smell it in the air and feel it on your skin: summer is nearly here. Exploring outside, appreciating plants and flowers in full bloom, longer hours of sunlight, and warmer weather, is the modus operandi for most folks this time of year. Perhaps you have low-key plans for relaxing on the beach, car camping with your family, or lounging in your own backyard. Or maybe you have bigger bucket list adventures on the horizon like thru hiking, long-distance running, or planned encounters with wildlife in remote landscapes.
Here are the top books to not only inspire and entertain you, but also, to teach you about the art of suffering and how to push yourself in order to reach your goals. Adventurers who love the outdoors will find these books worthwhile, either as a peek inside a world much different from your own, or as a map to journeys you’d like to try. From climbing the world’s highest mountains in the winter to spending time with bears in Alaska to backpacking the Pacific Crest Trail to walking and hiking as an elixir for peace and healing, these books are all interesting reads.
Readers new to the world of backpacking will find much to learn from Diana Helmuth’s How to Suffer Outside: A Beginner’s Guide to Hiking and Backpacking (2021, 224 pages). This guide, written by an every-day outdoorswoman, will walk you through the basics: gear, clothing, shelter, shoes, food, water, navigation, hygiene, and keeping your cool when things go wrong. Fun illustrations by Latasha Dunston, useful backpacking know-how, and supply lists educates readers and hopefully inspires neophytes to throw caution to the wind and get outside on their first big backcountry adventure. Do you have questions about using a pee rag? Do you know the difference between a personal locator and a satellite messenger? What about medicine wilderness kits? Do you need a bear canister? All these questions and more will be answered in this handy guide.
An important read, Walking Toward Peace: Veterans Healing on America’s Trails by Cindy Ross (2021, 208 pages) is about the restorative benefits that are earned with time spent in nature. Whether you’re trying to navigate through the world of PTSD or daily stressors, this book gives readers an insight into the world of “ecotherapy”. Learn about how the trail provides, reveals, and heals via the personal stories of veterans who have found curative solutions through the outdoors. Gain access to programs and resources that help veterans like: Higher Ground , National Outdoor Leadership School , Operation Purple Healing Adventures , Outward Bound , Sierra Club Military Outdoors , Veteran Expeditions , Warrior Expeditions , and Wounded Warrior Project .
Ilyssa Kyu and Dave Kyu’s Campfire Stories: Prompts for Igniting Stories by the Fire (2021) are the perfect addition to any family’s overnight camping trip. This collection of 50 cards will get even the quietist member of your group chatting. The authors encourage storytellers to connect with family and friends by constructing a good story, one that’s genuine and told with an engaging pace and rhythm. Items around the campsite (sticks, rocks, plants, etc.) can be used as props as well. Each card has a story starter that begins with the words “Tell a story about…”, followed by a unique prompt. “Tell a story about an unexpected animal encounter.” “Tell a story about a time you got lost or stranded.” “Tell a story about a time you pushed yourself further than you thought you could go.” Everyone around the fire pit will love hearing these homegrown narratives.
Alaska is one of the most alluring states in our nation for its untouched wilderness, wildlife, history and culture. If you want a practical guide book to help you navigate your trip planning, one that includes suggested itineraries and activities by season, look no further than Fran Golden and Midgi Moore’s 100 Things to Do in Alaska Before You Die (2021, 192 pages).
For an in-depth insight into the life of Alaskan brown bears, read Bjorn Dihle’s A Shape in the Dark: Living and Dying with Brown Bears (2021, 208 pages). Written by a professional wilderness guide, this book delves into environmental stressors that are threatening the life of bears and trespassing on the wild places that the author, and intrepid travelers, hold dear. These thoughtful essays give readers an awareness into what it might be like to grow up with easy access to remote landscapes, to hunt, and to explore the land where brown bears roam.
Putting yourself out there, seeing what you’re capable of, and testing the limits of your body, your resolve, and your grit teaches us that we can, in fact, do hard things. Heather “Anish” Anderson has written a second book on backpacking, called Mud, Rocks Blazes: Letting Go on the Appalachian Trail (2021, 240 pages). Anderson earned the Fastest Known Time record for her self-supported hike on the Pacific Crest Trail in 2013 and she propelled herself back into the game for her attempt to break another record on the Appalachian Trail. This book will take you through her emotional roller coaster of self-doubt, despair, and willpower as she sets out on foot for a solo adventure on the 2,180-mile trail. She learns to love herself along the way, while appreciating those who helped her reach her goals, and she is someone that you’ll root for while reading the book from front to back.
You might not ever be the sort of person who hikes tall peaks in the winter, putting your life at risk, but you may be the kind of human who likes to read about it from the safety of your own tent. Bernadette McDonald’s Winter 8000: Climbing the World’s Highest Mountains in the Coldest Season (2020, 272 pages) takes you on a global adventure, chronicling winter ascents of the fourteen highest peaks on the planet. Learn the stories of what motivates and pushes high alpine climbers to summit peaks in the cold temps, contending with wind, less oxygen, mishaps, and insecurity. How do these explorers justify the astonishing risks? How do they ward off boredom and loneliness? What do their families think when they have to say goodbye? You’ll find some answers in these accounts, but many questions will linger in the ether. And, if you find yourself taking deep breaths and looking up to assess your surroundings while reading this book, you’re not alone.
Humans have a great need to connect with others, to create societies, and to feel included. The backpacking community is one of the most inclusive groups out there, welcoming people from all walks of life into the fold. In Barney Scout Mann’s book, Journeys North: The Pacific Crest Trail (2020, 320 pages) , readers learn the story of multiple hikers as they make their way from Mexico to Canada on one of the most loved thru hikes in America. Barney is a rambler and a trail angel who has nurtured relationships in the great outdoors. If you’ve ever dreamed about hiking long-distance through different ecosystems, alongside a cast of unique characters, where humanity is on full display, then this is the book to crack open.

Outdoor reading activities open up a range of learning opportunities, so we asked educational consultant Dani Mundy for some inspiration to help us get active while learning to read. Here are six of our favourites that will show young learners that books are so much more than just a rainy day activity…
A scavenger hunt is a fun and energetic way to motivate children (and adults!) to get involved with book-related activities. Start by hiding items related to the book you’ve been reading around a park, green space, or garden. If it’s a rainy day, you can even have your scavenger hunt indoors! Let the children hunt for their items and challenge them to guess the story with as few items as possible.
Bonus idea: If you don’t have items to hand, you can play the same game using pictures instead. Print out some pictures from the book, hide them, and then see if your young learner can find them all. It might help if you put them into chronological order, and play out the story from the book.
Step 1. Go outside and see how many stones you can collect (they need to be big enough to write on).
Step 2. Once the stones have been collected, use them as a story or word board.
Step 3. Draw pictures and write words from the book on the stones.
Step 4. Use the stones to recreate the story. The stones can be put into different orders to retell the story in different ways.
Top tip! The stones can also be used to focus on key words from the book in question. It’s a fun way to recycle and review vocabulary for younger learners.
Children love making dens and this is an ideal way to create a reading spot in a garden or other outdoor space. With a few household items, such as boxes or bedsheets, you can DIY an outdoor nook that’s perfect for storytime. Encourage your little one to use natural objects such as leaves, sticks, flowers and stones for decoration. Now gather a few of your favorite books and get reading!
(This activity can be used to accompany First Words with Peppa Pig: The Den )
Find a small water bottle, ideally with a sports cap, and fill it up. On a space outside such as a grey patio or pavement, use the water bottle instead of a pen to draw characters from the book. The water bottle can also be used to focus on small key words from the book.
Writing can be tricky for younger learners and this is a useful way to practice motor skills in a fun and engaging manner. The water bottle idea can also be used to practice letter formation.
Ask the children to collect leaves, stones, pebbles and twigs from a garden or outdoor area. Next, ask them to try and make the name of their favourite character using the items they have collected. This is a tactile activity that can help motivate children to form letters and words.
Top tip! Use this game as a creative art task after reading the book together.
Step 1. Grab some scrap paper and go outside and make paper planes.
Step 2. Have a competition and see who can throw it the furthest.
Step 3. In a group of young learners, ask them to draw a picture of their favourite character from Peppa Pig on the wings of the paper plane.
Step 4. Now it’s time to throw them and find someone else’s paper plane. Can you guess the name of the character on the plane you pick up?
(This activity can be used to accompany First Words with Peppa Pig: Paper Planes )
There are many fun ways to support your child’s learning and build on the work they’re doing at school or nursery! Let’s look at some easy and effective activities that you can do at home to boost your child’s reading, writing and number skills.
Sometimes you need a helping hand to get little ones on their reading journey. This range of guides, videos and activities will help entertain whilst also developing their literacy skills.
Take your young learners on an imaginary journey around the globe with these Ladybird Readers activities using tales from India, China and Africa.
