TNA Impact Wrestling sometimes relied on risque content in an attempt for attention. However, TNA could go overboard with disgusting moments!
The low points of TNA followed them throughout the years with disgust from the audience. TNA had their fair share of great matches and moments featuring the likes of AJ Styles, Samoa Joe, Kurt Angle, and plenty others. Unfortunately, the negative memories ended up playing a bigger role in the company falling apart and never hitting its potential.
Fans wanted to see TNA truly compete with WWE or at least form their own identity like what AEW has done in their short history. The disgusting times ended up playing out to cause more dismay at the promotion. Things like poor booking, terrible match moments, or just bad luck led to TNA having times that we want to forget.
The most blatant instance of a disgusting moment in TNA featured the low point of Jeff Hardy’s career. Hardy has dealt with his fair share of substance abuse issues throughout the years, and it reached a boiling point in TNA.
A PPV main event between Hardy and Sting featured Jeff stumbling to the ring looking out of it. Eric Bischoff tried to buy time before Sting ended the match pinning Hardy in a few minutes. TNA allowing Jeff to perform in that condition made them look disgraceful.
The women’s division of TNA had many ups and downs throughout their various versions. TNA had some great matches and feuds with Gail Kim, Awesome Kong and Mickie James. However, there were ideas that showed little respect for the talents involved.
TNA booked a Lockbox Challenge where four women would grab briefcases with various prizes or punishments. Daffney was the unlucky winner with her briefcase forcing her to strip in the ring for a segment she later stated she didn’t want to do.
TNA tried to revamp Dustin Rhodes with the new character of Black Reign after his WWE stint as Goldust ended. Dustin wasn’t in the best position after various substance abuse issues harmed his career and he was in the worst shape as a wrestler.
The Black Reign gimmick was meant to be sinister and intimidating like a horror movie character. There was a pet rat that Black Reign spoke to and it led to gross segments of the vermin often shown close to him as part of the act.
The management style of Dixie Carter was criticized for how she treated talent . Dixie was a generally kind person, but she handled business poorly at times. The low point came when Carter became aware of talents unhappy about Hulk Hogan coming in with full power.
Dixie addressed them in a hostile manner for a pre-show meeting, saying anyone that doesn’t believe in her vision should leave. The segment appearing on television was a disgusting moment of Carter trying to enforce her power.
TNA implying death or near-death experiences led to shocking moments on the show. James Storm adopted a sadistic heel gimmick, using mind games to get an advantage of his opponents, especially during his feud with Magnus.
Mickie James’ friendship with Storm was used in the feud with him trying to get in his opponent’s head. The controversial moment featured Mickie getting shoved on train tracks by Storm, with camera footage not showing what happened to her. TNA explained on social media that people spotted Mickie to save her from her impending doom.
The personal element of feuds saw TNA often crossing the wrong lines and creating bad television. Claire Lynch was a mysterious character with ties to AJ Styles that Christopher Daniels and Frankie Kazarian claimed would ruin Styles’ career.
The accusations of AJ cheating on his wife with Lynch was a low storyline that no one enjoyed. TNA did try to clean it up by having Styles expose the lies, but the disgusting segments created a negative reception to lose viewers.
The TNA career of Bobby Lashley is remembered fondly for the dominant stints as the TNA World Champion. However, Lashley had a previous shorter run in TNA that ended quickly without any relevant moments.
Kristal Marshall appeared as Lashley’s manager and real-life wife, and she was used in a feud against Scott Steiner. The various advances by Steiner were already bad, but he tried to abduct her at one point before Lashley made the save.
One of the most underrated feuds in recent Impact Wrestling years featured the newer LAX of Santana and Ortiz with Konnan against The OGz of Homicide and Hernandez with Eddie Kingston. Impact would film a few segments of them having personal beefs with their respective gangs outside of the ring.
A controversial segment would see a young kid involved when The OGz ran him over with a car. The ridiculous moment received criticism, but Impact explained he was okay. Santana and Ortiz used this as motivation for their next battle with Homicide and Hernandez.
TNA would get a negative reputation for signing too many former WWE stars that were over the hill. No match summed that up better (or worse) than Mick Foley facing off with Ric Flair in a hardcore match on free television.
Flair and Foley both bladed to create a bloody mess in the ring. The visual of two older legends, clearly not in shape to wrestle, brutalizing each other to create slight attention was a terrible look for TNA. Neither man should have been in the ring at that point, let alone in that kind of match.
The unpredictable nature of wrestling will see performers have to ad-lib through mistakes. Great wrestlers will find ways to work that into the segment, but Austin Aries went overboard for an instance like this involving a ring announcing botch.
Christy Hemme announced Bad Influence of Christopher Daniels and Frankie Kazarian as a mistake when Aries and Bobby Roode were out first. Aries responded by cornering Hemme in the ring and climbing the ropes to stick his crotch in her face. Hemme was unhappy about the unprofessional act and TNA punished Aries for the disgusting moment.
