Before Toto was formed, members of the band performed sessions for other musicians. Drummer Jeff Porcaro, bassist David Hungate, and keyboardist David Paich (the son of session drummer Marty Paich and brother of guitarist Joe Porcaro) played on Boz Scaggs album from 1975 Silk Degrees. Toto was formed in the year 1976 following the collaboration.
The third album of Toto, Turn Back, marked a departure from the more progressive sound of their earlier albums and was criticized for its absence of hit singles. Guitarist Steve Lukather was chosen, and the band recorded the album Fahrenheit in 1986.

In the course of the tour for the album 40 Trips Around the Sun the drummer Leland Sklar quit the group and was replaced by Shem von Schroeck. In 2017, Toto released a double-CD live album titled Falling in Between, which included live recordings from the tour as well as an interview with the group.
