The demonstration in Yekaterinburg reinforces claims that Russia is reviving Soviet-style demonstrations of force under Vladimir Putin
Schoolgirls in Russia have been made to march through deep snow to demonstrate their patrotism, in a parade which has provoked outrage.
The demonstration in Yekaterinburg reinforces claims that Russia is reviving Soviet-style demonstrations of force under Vladimir Putin .
The shivering girls in the video, who were wearing skirts, are believed to be between 10 and 13, and were made to show off their marching skills despite a freak late April snow storm.
The schoolgirls - taking part in the contest ‘Sons and Daughters of Motherland’ organised by Russian defence minister Sergei Shoigu, a close Putin ally - marched in summer shoes, white shirts, forage caps and light tights though ankle deep snow.
Boys wore light shirts and khaki trousers.
The shivering girls took the salute in front of military officers dressed in winter uniforms.
“I’d love to know surnames of these officers,” said Yekaterinburg resident Inna Nikulina.
“I can only imagine what they do in real army if they push children to march in their summer kits in snow. What swines.”
Another critic Ramilya Allayarova said: “I can’t stand the sight of warmly-dressed men watching girls marching in snow.
“How on earth do they send children to perform outside in such weather?”
Another said: “Are we at war? Whoever needs these Soviet-style drill competitions?
“How can anyone explain kicking these children outdoors, not properly dressed, into snow?”
A video spread on social media with a male voice saying: "This is a Russian Patriot competition.
“So girls dressed in summer pumps, skirts, shirts, tights stand in snow.. or, finally they move... in this kind of weather. This is how Russia grows its patriots, by taking girls out in such weather.” The contest culminates in a ‘March of the Victors’ spectacle in Moscow in October.
Olga Rogulina, contest organiser, said an alternative venue could not be used because the floor was broken.
“We felt really sorry for children, of course,” she said, claiming they wanted to march and drill in the snow.
“They were issued with thermal underwear,” she said.

Disturbing new video shows the moment an Australian police department employee corners a 13-year-old girl in an elevator and gropes her as she frantically attempts to get away.
Glenn Roche, 54, who was found guilty of indecent assault this week, is seen in the footage chasing the youngster into the elevator after a day out with her family, the New Zealand Herald reported on Thursday.
Roche seems to be playfully chasing the girl but then the sicko grabs her, fondles her and tries to kiss her while she tries to wrestle free, the footage posted by TVNZ-TV shows.
The girl later told authorities that she still suffers nightmares from the harrowing July 2019 assault, according to the Herald.
But Roche told the judge he was just playing around and claimed there was “no sexual gratification on my behalf.”
“My hands have slid up her body as she slid to the ground,” the sicko told police. “My mind has gone off on a tangent like this is a challenge to me. I can get her and give her a kiss on the cheek like her two sisters and mum.”
“She contributed to that occurring by releasing her body weight and sliding through my hands,” he said, blaming his tiny victim.
Police said Roche had been out with the girl’s mom and siblings. It is unclear what his relationship to the girl and her family was.
The judge wasn’t buying his excuse, however, and found Roche guilty.
He was also suspended from the police department, where he worked as a civilian employee, according to the reports.

WHERE WERE YOU? Creepy video sparking fears the world will end in three days revealed
A TIKTOK video shows an older man groping a woman aboard a Spirit Airlines flight - and the teen says no one intervened.
"The man was like 50-60s and I was so uncomfy @spiritairlines #fyp#foryou #harassmentawareness," read the video's caption, which was posted to TikTok.
"On my flight to California the man behind kept touching my arms and boobs," the video started.
The video shows the woman sitting in the window seat leaning back when she moves to show the man's hand grasping for air between the seat gap.
Posted on Wednesday night by the user @ mobilesushibar , the woman says she showed the video to Spirit flight attendants and those in her proximity, only to be ignored.
"And when I confronted him and showed the video to everyone around me and the flight attendants I was told to sit down and stay quiet 😐," the video narrated. "F you spirit airlines."
The poster got plenty of supportive messages following the video, with people urging she file a suit against Spirit.
"I’d yell and scream and make a scene, everyone needs to know," wrote one user.
"[T]hey told me to sit down and be quiet, and my mom told me the same," she added.
"@spiritairlines what are you going to do about this?!? This is APPALLING!!!" wrote another commenter.
The video has been watched over 810,000 times and has over 255,000 likes and comments since it was posted two days ago.
In a subsequent set of videos, the woman said she boarded the plane at 6AM with her family and sat in separate seats.
She said she then switched with a woman who wanted the aisle seat.
She said she was getting settled and began reading a book when she "felt a slight tough like something was caressing me right here"
"I wonder what this feeling could be, it was really subtle, and I reached my hand over and touched his finger tips," she continued.
She then texted her sister to tell her that she was being groped. "I thought it would stop there because he knows that I know that he was touching me because I touched his fingertips."
After some time passed and she resumed the previous position so she can read, "it happened again, so this is when I was like I can tell he's trying to reach for my boobs."
"So I have to sit there through an hour of harassment," she added to get video of him to show the flight attendants.
"He was trying to deny it," she said after showing them the video "and I was told to please calm down, sit down, be quiet."
"That made me really upset that no one cared that I was going through that for so long."
"The fact that I had to sit there and collect evidence for nothing speaks volumes."

A pornographic photo-sharing website featuring images of Australian schoolgirls is back online 10 days after being shut down by authorities.
Beginning of dialog window. Escape will cancel and close the window.
This is a modal window. This modal can be closed by pressing the Escape key or activating the close button.
The website caused widespread outrage this month when it was revealed that many of the pictures were of underage students and were published without their knowledge.
Website users request images of girls from particular high schools, including Wenona, Turramurra High School, Asquith Girls High, Blaxland High School, Wyong High School, Holsworthy High School and John Therry Catholic High School.
Schoolgirls have been unwittingly targeted on a pornographic website.
Users refer to nude images as "wins" and offer to swap pictures with others.
It is believed more than 2000 images of students from an estimated 70 Australian schools have been uploaded since the website was established in December.
Barker College, Leumeah High School and Mullumbimby High School are among the NSW schools targeted on the site since it went back online, News Corp reports.
Some girls who have asked for their images to be removed from the site have been mocked by the users.
"Darling, don't be a slut and you won't end up here," one user posted to a girl who protested. "Once a photo is on snapchat or the Internet, it belongs to the Internet."
One young woman who found a photograph of herself on the website described the violation as "terrifying". The photo was taken from her Facebook page.
"Just to know that someone is out there looking for naked photos of me and doesn't care how I feel is very intimidating," she told Fairfax Media.
The overseas hosted website was shut down earlier this month after Australian authorities raised the alarm about the age of some of the girls in the photos. Some of the students were as young as 15 when their images were taken.
In a statement to Fairfax Media, The Office of the Children's eSafety Commissioner said that it was "in contact with a number of those involved in the complex supply chain for this website".
"The image of the young girl originally referred by the Office has been removed from the site, and the site's administrator has been made aware that content on the site breaches its own terms of use," the statement said.
"The Office expects further modifications."
Minors who see "intimate images" of themselves online are encouraged to report it on the eSafety Commissioner's website .
Women or girls who have had their photos taken can find further advice at eSafetyWomen .
