Tina Kotek (born September 30, 1966) is an American politician who served as speaker of the Oregon House of Representatives from 2013 to 2022. She is currently the Democratic nominee for governor of Oregon in the 2022 election . Kotek was the first out lesbian to serve as a state speaker of the house, and was the longest-serving speaker in Oregon history before entering the gubernatorial race. [8]

Born and raised in York, Pennsylvania , Kotek attended Dallastown Area High School , where she graduated second in her class. [9] She attended Georgetown University , but left without graduating. [9] After departing Georgetown, she worked in commercial diving and as a travel agent. [9]

She moved to Oregon in 1987, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in religious studies from the University of Oregon in 1990. [4] [5] [6] [7] She then went on to graduate study at the University of Washington , earning a master’s degree in international studies and comparative religion. [9]

Before being elected to office, Kotek worked as the policy director of Children First for Oregon, prior to which she was a public policy advocate for the Oregon Food Bank . [10] She co-chaired the Human Services Coalition of Oregon during the 2002 budget crisis and served as the co-chair of the Governor’s Medicaid Advisory Committee.

In 2004, Kotek lost the Democratic primary for Oregon House District 43. In 2006, she won a three-way Democratic primary for Oregon House District 44, which includes North and Northeast Portland . In the general election, she defeated her Republican opponent with nearly 80 percent of the vote.

Kotek ran unopposed for re-election in 2008. [11] In 2010, she faced a Democratic primary challenge but won over 85% of the vote. [12] Kotek won the 2010 general election with almost 81% of the vote. [13] She was re-elected every two years, through the 2020 election. [14]

Kotek rose in the House leadership, serving as the Democratic whip in the 2009 legislative session . In the 2011 session , she was co- speaker pro tempore , a position shared with Republican Andy Olson due to the House's 30–30 partisan split.

In April 2007, Kotek's spouse, Aimee Kotek Wilson, was accused by the Republican leader, Wayne Scott , of violating Oregon House rules when she joined Kotek on the House floor during the debate on marriage equality legislation. [15]

In June 2011, Kotek was chosen by the House Democratic Caucus as their leader (succeeding Dave Hunt ). [16]

After Democrats won a House majority in the 2012 election, they nominated Kotek for speaker of the House for the 2013 legislative session . [17] Kotek was elected to the position, becoming the first out lesbian to serve as a legislative speaker in the United States. [18] [19] She was re-elected for the two-year sessions in 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2021. [20] [21] She is the longest-serving speaker of the House in Oregon history. [22]

In December 2016, Kotek became the chair of the board of directors of the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee . [23] She left the post in July 2019. [24]

In January 2022, she announced her resignation from the speakership and from her House seat to focus on her campaign. [25] She was succeeded as speaker by Dan Rayfield [26] , and in the 44th House District seat by Travis Nelson . [27]

On September 1, 2021, Kotek declared her candidacy for Governor in the 2022 Oregon gubernatorial election . [28] Her main opponent in the Democratic primary was Tobias Read , the state treasurer. She won the Democratic primary on May 17, 2022. [29]

In the general election for governor, Kotek's main opponents are Republican candidate and former state representative Christine Drazan and unaffiliated candidate and former state senator Betsy Johnson . [31] The election is on November 8, 2022.

Kotek considers herself a lapsed Catholic and attends an Episcopal church. [9]

A lesbian , [32] Kotek was one of the only openly-gay members of the Oregon Legislative Assembly , and the first lesbian speaker of a state house. Her election campaigns have won the support of the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund , [33] which provides financial and strategic assistance.

Is Tiny Tina not a lesbian anymore?

The Borderlands game franchise, including all DLC, sequels, pre-sequels, and re-pre-sequels.
The original writer Antony Burch wrote her as a lesbian and has confirmed it any time he has been asked. Then I find the "rsvp" echos in borderlands 3 and older Tina talks about having an ex boyfriend which implies that she is now bisexual.
It's weird because gearbox is probably one of the best studios when is comes to lgbt rep, and the rep in borderlands 3 is really good. We have a great gay characters with Hammerlock and Jakobs. There are a ton of great bisexual characters from Ellie, Zane and moxxie. They even introduced a character who is transiting to a man Lorelei who is played by a trans man. You can really tell gearbox takes this stuff seriously, but the one prominent lesbian character in the game, Tina who was written original as a lesbian is now Bisexual?
> The original writer Antony Burch wrote her as a lesbian
Wait, wasn't she like 13? I mean, i understand that you can and will show orientation tendencies in early puberty, but come on.
Thank you, someone showing common sense on the internet is refreshing
Didn't you have crushes when you were 13? Wasn't that, basically, where your brain went half the time? So did she.
Are you actually suggesting that it's wrong to write minors as a certain sexual orientation? Children have crushes, too, you know. There's nothing wrong with showing that.
Anthony Burch wrote a LOT of stuff that was never actually canon. Such as Zer0 being agender and using they/them pronouns, them being aromantic, Maya being asexual. There are some hints of it being true in the Headhunter DLCs, but most of it is just from his AskFM page. Which sucks, but it is kind of his fault for giving us that hope then never making it official in game. Also, as far as I'm aware, no character ever outright states their sexuality, just says who they like, what genders they are attracted too, or what genders they aren't attracted to. Which you can glean info from, but no one has said the words 'I am bisexual'.
Sexualities can change over time. It’s important for characters to be dynamic.
I don't know that seems like giving the Borderlands writers too much credit, plus I don't expect people here to know how common this is for perviously established lesbian characters to have them suddenly be with men after talking up a big game on how inclusive a show is and patting themselves on the back for it and how this never happens with gay male characters, and defenetly not straight male characters. It's a stereotype telling lesbians they just need to find the right man cause they don't know better.
For years it was a choice between them getting killed off or end up with a man or on rare occasions become background characters.
True, but a lot of the characters don't change from game to game a lot of the characters are written the same. The writers of the new game have said that they made an effort to keep the characters similar to what they where in previous games. And we have a ton of bisexual representation already in borderlands 3 we only have one lesbian character that the writers have apparently decided to make her bisexual. I don't think changing the one positive lesbian representation sexuality is dynamic just feels wrong.
Her orientation was never explicitly stated, only that a lot of her dialogue made it obvious that she appreciated the female figure.
As far as BL3 is concerned she had a boyfriend which she said stated she offed rather quickly and has had several girlfriends since, not including her most recent ex.
Maybe she’s still in the experimenting phase, maybe she found her interest what with the majority of her exes being ladies. Game hasn’t stuck to one or the other. The only constant is that she likes crazy like her, and fine ass damsels.
Prominent lesbian character? She was a damn child and sexuality had absolutely nothing to do with her character at all
I know this is 2 years old, but I still feel the need for correction.
T and A is something Tina talks about CONSTANTLY in borderlands 2, it's just that when she says "bombshell" it's not a euphemism, so it's not clear if when she says "look at these damn fine ladies, they thicc as hell" she means it in a sexual way or not.
That said, I love the idea that she's attracted to explosions more than anything.
My sister had a bf back in high school and she is now 35 and married to her wife 🤷🏼‍♂️, sometimes people don't fully know at the time either. Then there is also pansexual where attraction isn't based off of what sex the individual is. Or maybe she is demigender.
BL3 is a liberal wet dream tbh. Combine this with fact that the main characters are kickass girls, and the 1 or 2 two straight white males are bumbling idiots. Not to mention the male half of the main antagonist duo is just a parasite.
I'm liberal and think that Borderlands tries really hard with some of its messaging. Whatever though. I don't know if the two straight white males are idiots (are you referencing Brick and Mordecai? Because Mordecai is pretty smart), but my friends and I have a running joke about how so many characters are LGBT, and whenever a character is revealed as such we're like "of course they're gay why wouldn't they be."
and the 1 or 2 two straight white males are bumbling idiots
You mean, Troy, who became a hyper-powerful Siren by killing another hyper-powerful Siren and helped lead a massive cult?
You mean, Typhon, a world-acclaimed vault hunter who discovered the secrets of the universe and bravely sacrificed himself to save it?
You mean Brick and Mordecai, two characters consistently shown to be kind, daring and good in a pinch?
Maybe you're talking about Marcus, the ultra-wealthy narrator of the story?
Maybe Zane, a kick-ass player-character?
Your persecution complex is so rank it's making my eyes water. If you've really got an issue with Rhys and Vaughn being the universe's comic relief, maybe also acknowledge that the first is regularly applauded for single-handedly ressurecting Atlas as a company, and the second might be a bit of a muppet but is also noted for being a well established Bandit figure. The idea that they're nothing more than "bumbling idiots" kinda betrays your own biases more than the writing, imo. (Some of these characters might not be specifically straight -- but pretending like there's some crusade against straight white dudes in BL3 is just laughable).
Never noticed that, also idk why but Reddit is extremely liberal so you're probably gonna get downvoted
Or, as many authors/writers say. “I did this because I can.”
Was a rough quote of Anthony Burch’s reasoning for the diversity of the cast which he introduced in BL2. There’s an article he wrote about it that I found interesting and it was written as a defense to “pointless diversity.”
Essentially stating he shouldn’t need to have a reason to have gay characters, or bi characters, non-white characters, etc. in his stories beyond just wanting them in. He made Hammerlock gay because he could, he gave Tina a preference for ladies because he could.
Although I agree that LGBTQIA+ characters might be over represented in BL3, it may surprise you to learn that we actually do exist irl

In the game she was constantly talking about fine ass big bootys but I really thought nothing of it then I read her Maya invitation and she was blatantly hitting on her. Not that there's anything wrong with that. I guess its cool that they added a 12 year old lesbian character to a game that's sort of groundbreaking. What do you guys think about it?
I think you're looking too much into it.
Everyone on Pandora goes both ways, man.
Well considering the public is split between love and hate I think they are blind to things like this. I do not think she is lesbian because her character is based on heavily exaggerated pop culture. In films and real life women will constantly compliment each other on their assets. Her blatantly hitting on any of the female cast can fall under how she was designed. Also, she is a demented 12yr old so she still maintains child like properties on not being interested in the opposite gender. It's all speculation though.

Pretty sure she's not a lesbian. A lot of characters in the game comment on Maya's looks, and its not surprising that a little kid would ask if a badass like Maya likes her or not. Also, saying someone of the same sex is good looking doesn't mean you're homosexual.

I think she's annoying as hell, and the writers who made her need several days of bed rest after trying so ****ing hard. Liked her in Assault On Dragon Keep, though. I enjoy that they actually gave her some depth of a character outside of incessant rambling about badonkadonks, cookies and other dumb ****. Which is a shame, since they took this long to do something that great with such an awful character. Went a long way towards me not wishing Ashly Burch would be hit by a car. Very well-done DLC. In terms of her sexuality? She's thirteen years old, dude. Take off those creepy glasses and shave that weird mustache, and for god's sake sell that windowless van. Trust me. It'll do you some good.
Give me what I want, and I'll go away. :D
She's obviously a trans-gendered pan-sexual.
