A (also known as a) is a switch which opens and closes an electrical circuit when it is tilted at certain angles. When it is slanted a percentage of the liquid metal mercury reaches metal electrodes to close the circuit. Mercury switches have one or more sets of electrical contacts in a sealed glass envelope which contains a bead of mercury.

Gravity is continuously pulling the drop of mercury to the lowest point in the envelope. When the switch is slanted in the appropriate direction, the mercury touches a set of contacts, therefore finishing the electrical circuit through those contacts. Tilting the switch the opposite instructions triggers the mercury to move far from that set of contacts, hence breaking that circuit.

Tilt switches come in various forms and sizes. Popular are the mercury changes, that are obsolete in most nations now due to the harmful metal in it. These days most mechanical tilt changes consist of a metal ball that makes or breaks the contact.

This basic Tilt Change includes a metal ball inside that relapses and forth depending on the orientation. When the Gold Leg is facing downwards and the Silver Leg is facing upwards, the ball is at the contact point and the switch is triggered. When the internal ball rolls towards the silver leg, the switch is disconnected and you have an open circuit.
