Monterrey, Mexico – October 25, 2023
In a high-stakes Liga MX clash that had fans on the edge of their seats, Tigres UANL emerged victorious with a dramatic 3-2 win over Querétaro at the Estadio Universitario on Wednesday night. The match, filled with end-to-end action, stunning goals, and late drama, solidified Tigres' position as one of the top contenders in the league.
The home side got off to a flying start when French striker André-Pierre Gignac opened the scoring in the 12th minute with a powerful header off a pinpoint cross from Luis Quiñones. The early goal sent the packed stadium into a frenzy, but Querétaro responded quickly. Just seven minutes later, Argentine midfielder Pablo Barrera leveled the score with a stunning long-range strike that left Tigres goalkeeper Nahuel Guzmán with no chance.
The first half ended 1-1, but the second half saw both teams ramp up the intensity. Tigres regained the lead in the 55th minute through a well-worked team goal, finished off by midfielder Rafael Carioca. However, Querétaro refused to back down, and in the 68th minute, forward Ángel Sepúlveda capitalized on a defensive error to slot home the equalizer.
With the score tied at 2-2 and time running out, it was Gignac who once again proved to be the hero for Tigres. In the 89th minute, the veteran forward unleashed a spectacular free-kick from just outside the box, curling it into the top corner and sending the home crowd into raptures. The goal sealed a hard-fought victory for Tigres and extended their unbeaten run in the league.
After the match, Tigres head coach Robert Siboldi praised his team's resilience. 'It was a tough game, but the players showed great character to come back and win. Gignac's quality made the difference, but this was a team effort,' he said.
Querétaro manager Mauro Gerk, meanwhile, expressed pride in his team's performance despite the loss. 'We fought hard and showed we can compete with the best. We’ll take the positives and keep pushing forward,' he stated.
The win moves Tigres into second place in the Liga MX table, while Querétaro remains in the middle of the pack. Both teams will now turn their attention to their next fixtures, with Tigres looking to maintain their momentum and Querétaro aiming to bounce back.
For now, the Tigres faithful can celebrate a memorable night of football, capped off by another moment of magic from their beloved Gignac.
