—>—
Tue want of a good practical Dictionary of the two languages to
which this volume is devoted, had long been felt, and. by no one
more so than by the compiler himself, who filled the chair of the
English Professor of the Athenzeum and Episcopal College at
Bruges.
Taken as a whole, the abridgment of Boyer’s excellent
dictionary still retained its pre-eminence ; but since the Revoca-
tion of the Edict of Nantes in 1680, which brought that eminent
lexicographer an exile to our shores, both languages have
undergone many changes,’ receiving constant additions, and
rendering words in use in bygone days obsolete, or of different
signification to that which they then maintained. To meet this
difficulty, in the new editions of Boyer’s Dictionary which have
appeared during the present century, their editors added, often
without judgment or critical discrimination, many words which
the exigencies of the day had called into being, but which were
destined to retain no stability in either language.
Boyer’s Dictionary, thus “improved,” was like an ancient
edifice ‘ modernized” without regard to the design of the
architect who had planned the original structure. Yet these
modern editions of the book have formed the basis of most of the
school dictionaries in general use. To M. Edward Weller the
merit is due of having quitted the beaten track, and taking
‘‘Johnson’s Diétionary,” as edited by Dr. Todd, =e the

‘‘ Dictionnaire de l’Académie Frangaise”’ in its last revised
form for the foundation, by aid of the labours of Boyer,
Hamoniére, Bailey, Walker, Crabb, Webster, and others, of
having produced a dictionary eminently calculated to render
the reading of the current literature and newspapers of the day,
_ as well as that which has become classical, no longer a task of
difficulty to the student of French or English.
In the English portion, the derivative roots from other
languages are given in most cases where they are not of Latin or
Anglo-Norman extraction; the latter being the same in both
languages they are sufficiently obvious. But the great feature
-to which the publishers desire to call the reader’s attention, is
the introduction of a careful selection of those words which
modern progress has called into being—Technical, Scientific,
Legal, Commercial, Naval, and Military terms, without a
knowledge of which no one can join in the conversation of our
present daily life, or understand the literature of the times. -
The work was originally published at Brussels in 1850, the
compiler, under whose care the stereotype plates were prepared,
having sought to combine completeness and portability with
elegance and extreme accuracy in its production.
