It’s a trope of many an action film: at some point the hero will end up trussed with rope, and will have to escape from this bondage in order to stop the villain’s devious plans at the last possible moment.
But getting tied up can happen in real-life kidnapping/abduction/hostage-taking scenarios too. And there are some real techniques you can employ to escape these restraints. We unpack them below.
Increasing your chances of escape begins before the rope is cinched and the knots are tied. By positioning your body in certain ways, you’ll create more potential slack in the rope, which will make it easier to wriggle out of. While acting as if you are passive and compliant with your captor, you’ll actually be intentionally presenting your body in a way that makes his restraints less effective.
When you present your hands as shown above, space is created between the wrists. Once you’re left by yourself, and bring your elbows back together, there will be slack in the rope that will help you wriggle your hands out of it.
Likewise, if you’re being tied to a chair, make your body bigger by pulling your shoulders back, expanding your chest, straightening your arms, and pushing and flexing against the rope. Once your captors leave you alone, and you collapse your body back in, you’ll find yourself with slack in the rope, making it easier to escape from. If you’re tied around a pole by your chest and ankles, brace your knees and the toes of your shoes together, to create this space/slack in your lower body.
By making your body bigger, and putting extra slack in the rope, you may be able to wriggle out of it through sheer contortionism. But what if you find yourself in a position where the ropes are looser, but still secure? And what if your hands aren’t restrained in front of you? If your abductor isn’t a rank amateur (though many are), he’s likely to tie your hands behind your back.
To get the rope over and off your hands, whether they’re tied in front or behind you, you’ll need to employ some writhing and persistence, as outlined in the steps above. If your hands are in front of you, you’ll also be able to use your teeth to work on undoing the knots and pulling strands of the rope over your hands.
If you’re not able to to unravel the rope using these tactics, try to sever it by rubbing it against a sharp object — the corner of a desk or wall, the strike-plate on a doorway, the razor blade you secreted in your shoe (you did remember to stash a razor blade in your shoe, didn’t you?!).
If you’ve been restrained with zip ties, rather than rope, here’s how to bust out of them.

Exploring rope bondage and healthy kinky relationships
Every now and then we end up tying people who are determined to be… well, tricksy. Who will try and untie your knots and escape your rope. And sometimes that’s the nature of the game. “Let’s see how long it takes you to get out.”
And sometimes, we want to make life more difficult for such people.
So below is a very simple trick to make escape a lot more difficult.
This trick is called locking your bight . It works with single column or double column ties, and is often used to prevent knots from collapsing and somehow undoing themselves. However, there’s no reason not to use this if you’re going for more inescapable bondage – except of course that it will make it more difficult for you to undo in an emergency , and so it increases the chance of having to cut the rope with safety shears instead. There you go. Informed risk.
Below is your basic single column tie. Actually, it’s the Summerville Bowline or “Struggler’s Knot” variation, which I rather like due to it’s neatness and quickness. As you can see, you’ve got your bight sticking out, and the working end sticking out toward the bottom of the picture.
All you have to do to lock your bight is to run your working end through the bight, as pictured below.
This effectively makes it nearly impossible to untie the knot; because when you go to pull the bight back through, it “locks” against the working end – which you’ve cleverly left tied somewhere your rope bottom or muse can’t reach it.
If you want to make it look tidier or make it even more challenging, then shorten your bight – simple to do, just use less rope on your single column tie.
And, once again, run your working end through the bight. You’ll want to leave at least two thumbs worth of width within the bight, or getting your working end through might be more of a chore than you would like. You may have to fit one knotted end through at a time, if you use knots to finish your rope.
Looks pretty neat, huh? Simple, but effective. It won’t stop your bottom from cutting your rope or trying to slip their wrist out, so mind the tightness; but it will stop them from untying the knot. This trick works with both single and forward tension double column ties – pretty much anywhere where you’ve left a bight sticking out.
I’m a kinky guy who once upon a time was challenged by his girlfriend to tie her up… and at the time, didn’t have a clue how.
That was six years ago.
A lot has changed since then… to the point where I’m now documenting, sharing information, and showing other people how to do all the things I couldn’t do back then.
I even wrote a book, designed to help everyone who comes here get past all the problems and difficult bits quickly, easily, and a lot more smoothly than I did.
Learning rope bondage in isolation is really, REALLY hard…
So I want to make it easier. For me, and for everyone else!
