Tidelands (2018) takes place in a sleepy village where an ex-convict returns home and finds that people in her town are half-sirens and half-humans. She uncovers truths and lies in her town while we uncover hot women taking off their clothes. Charlotte Best plays our leading lady who shows off her beast breasts when she took off her bra and unloaded her flotation devices as she slipped into a bathtub. Elsa Pataky gets wacky when she took off her clothes in a sex scene that showed off her slick body and round melons. That blond looks good with clothes on and off because her cleavage is incredible! Netflix’s first Australian original series Tidelands , is a lot of things.
Described by the cast as “dangerous”, “exciting”, “real” and “sensual”, it’s this last adjective that we’re going to focus on today. Because the series, which follows young Cal McTeer (played by Aussie actress Charlotte Best) as she returns to the small fishing town of Orphelin Bay after being in prison for 10 years only to be thrust into the ongoing tensions between the human inhabitants and half-siren, half-human community of tidelanders, is very sexy .
Both groups are sexy in equal measure. You have the tidelanders, led by Adrielle (played by Elsa Pataky), who are characterised by palpable sex appeal . They’re sirens, so it makes sense. Dylan (Marco Pigossi) in particular is a whole meal and not a snack. Then you have the humans, who are also hot, but in a more rough-and-tumble way. Augie (Aaron Jakubenko), Cal’s brother is the leader in more ways that one, if you catch my drift.

And it’s not one of those shows that is just unintentionally sexy - there is clear intent behind the tone with all of the actors looking like they’ve walked out of a fashion magazine with their brooding gazes and toned physiques. There’s also just a lot of sex. Which is fantastic news for us here at whimn.com.au appreciate what it takes to pull of a good, compelling sex scene. Because not all sex scenes are made equal, after all, and the sex scenes we see on Tidelands are varied in how they play out.
In one of the first sex scenes we see, Adrielle straddles Augie like one usually does when riding cowgirl, except he begins going bright red and struggles as if she’s squashing him to death. Such is the immensity of her power that by straddling him she can literally crush him. Here, sex is not merely sex . Instead, the metaphors we often talk about around power are fully realised.
Talking to the cast about the sex scenes reveals that the intention behind the scenes informs how they play out on screen. Discussing the aforementioned sex scene with whimn.com.au , Elsa Pataky says, “It’s interesting because there are different ways to show a sex scene and I always feel like there’s got to be something interesting behind it that you can really feel. When we shot that sex scene, it was only the second day of shooting and yet we still felt so confident because it wasn’t really about sex, it was about how the characters are; you see so much in that scene and you establish a lot.
“It was easy, we actually enjoyed it because it was really professional and we knew what we were doing. And he was exhausted by the end.”

Aaron agrees adding, “We call them sex scenes, or this scene or that scene but it’s always so much deeper than that. This was a scene that was about exploring and understanding, very quickly, their relationship and their differences. I think it was a beautiful opening for their relationship on screen to understand that the power that these tidelanders have.”
Actors have been very vocal about the reality of how technical, and well, unsexy they are to film. Speaking to the Tidelands cast, they echo those same sentiments when explaining how they approached filming them. Charlotte tells us, “It’s the least sexy thing in the world, with all your mates on set getting it done. You’re probably cold or wet. But we’re mates so it was super comfortable and they look after us really well.”
For Pigossi, the sex scenes we see in Tidelands are different to what we’re used to seeing on screen because they have purpose beyond just superficial steaminess. He explains, “When you’re talking about a sex scene or sex, I think it’s important to ask, ‘does this add to the story? Is it important? Will it lead somewhere? Is there a reason for it or is it just gratuity?’ If it’s just for that, it doesn’t make sense and you won’t be able to do it right but if it’s in context and in the story and it’s going to lead to somewhere else then I think it’s good.”
He continues, “I think that’s the thing with the sexiness of Tidelands; it’s not the first thing you see, you see a lot of other things before that and that’s what I love about the show.”
This is somewhat arguable given one of the first people we see on the show is a wet, naked siren woman, but we’ll allow him this one.

One of the most wholesome characters on the show is good-doer policeman, Corey (Mattias Inwood). Corey and Cal share a number of intimate scenes together, and for Inwood, a compelling sex scene is marked by narrative purpose, “It’s gotta be done tastefully,” he says, “It can’t be too much, if it’s too much the audience get uncomfortable with it and at the end of the day, it’s there to serve the purpose of storytelling as well, so it’s never about sex itself, it’s about the storytelling element and telling the story between two characters.”
Madeleine Madden, who plays the rebellious and at-times villainous Violca, builds on this by adding sex scenes need, “A build-up of tension and you know, a release. It’s what people want to see, it’s what we all look for in real life and it’s what brings us back in. I think there’s a bit of that in this, you know, with the gazes and touching. The powers that the tidelanders have with moving blood and water just adds that sense of sensuality.”
Tidelands is streaming now on Netflix.
