Israel’s Disastrous Winter Howls out with Fierce Wind

Now, we are driving along the Sea of Galilee. When I focused in on the map, I was surprised to also see the sites of public bomb shelters……. What is the Golan Heights? The Golan Heights was part of Syria prior to this time. Israel has occupied and annexed it since The Separation of Forces Agreement created an Alpha Line to the west of the separation area, behind which Israeli military forces must remain, and and Bravo Line to the East, behind which the Syrian forces must remain. Why does Israel want this buffer zone? Israel says that the civil war in Syria demonstrates the need to keep a buffer zone between Israeli towns and the instability of its neighbors. Israel also states, it fears that Iran, an ally of President Bashar al-Assad, is seeking to establish itself on the Syrian border, in which to launch attacks on Israel. And, both sides want the water resources and naturally fertile soil. As we can see in the past few weeks Syria has indeed launched attacks from here. I am reminded that I have never had to worry about who my neighbor is and what they may be up to! A look now at Tiberias, as we pass through….. It was also the home of the Sanhedrin, the court for Jewish law. Why is Tiberias important for the Christians? Tiberias is mentioned in John as the location from which the crowds of people in their boats had sailed back to the eastern side of the Sea of Galilee, when Jesus had withdrawn to the hillside after feeding the people with the loaves and fishes. The disciples had decided to go back to Capernaum without Jesus. Four miles into the rowing, a violent storm blew in and the disciples saw Jesus walking on the water and they were afraid! He told them to stop being frightened! They caught nothing that night, but just as dawn was breaking Christ stood on the beach, although they did not recognize Him, at first. He told them to cast their net on the right side of the boat. For centuries, al-Maghtas was the most important baptism site for pilgrims and monasteries and guest houses were established near it. Al-Maghtas is located now in Jordan. The earliest religious structures connected with baptism or religious baths, are here, and this is a World Heritage Site in Jordan, today. Due to military activity here, the Israeli Ministry of Tourism established Yardenit, as the alternative pilgrimage site and it was the first regulated baptism site in Israel. Yardenit has attracted Christian pilgrims and a visitor center has been built. What does Yardenit mean? Yardenit was a very beautiful site, but I also had some misgivings about it. So, in , the alternative site of Yardenit was built and funded for the Kibbutz Kinneret to offer a Christian baptismal site. My thoughts on this, concern the kibbutz operating the site. To reach the Jordan River, the half million annual visitors to Yardenit, must walk through a large gift shop. There is also a large indoor restaurant, snack bar and for-pay toilets and showers. No other gowns are allowed! I would also question, why one would be baptized here in the first place. I would think most American believers have already been baptized in their own home churches. So, I think it was special that I was here on the Jordan River, and the Sea of Galilee, where so many things took place, but I find no need to be re-baptized, ever. But, for those that do, the Israelis have provided a nice spot for that purpose. That a nation is forced to live like this, always with weapons ready and looking over their shoulder. There are so many sad stories on both sides of the border. Someone is always making a profit. Like Liked by 1 person. Charging for baptismal gowns? So many restrictions? Like Like. I was appalled at the demands for money in Jerusalem from the custodians of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre Greek Orthodox, Franciscan Order and the Armenian Church to the orthodox Jew who offered to pray for us at the wailing wall and whipped out a credit card machine from under his cloak to encourage payment. Every biblical site seemed to be packaged as a money spinner. I was told I would feel moved on the Mount of Olives but being accosted by traders offering olivewood souvenirs put paid to that. Tel Aviv was less demanding and there were no touts in Masada. Oh, I think we notice it! I will reveal more of my thoughts when we get to my Jerusalem posts! I enjoyed my visit to Yardenit some years ago. On our visit we were not charged a fee. Neither were we charged a fee at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Many sites which are holy to Christians are not exactly known. I chose not to be baptized at the site also. It was not an authentic location in my opinion. I think that is right, what may be holy to us mat not be holy to them…. I guess I should not have expected it to be either. So far we have seen a good mix on our travels, of Christian, Turkish, and Israeli Holy sites. It puts things in perspective, I think, Cady. This site uses Akismet to reduce spam.
