The Blue Mountains' essential sight is a rocky trio called the Three Sisters. Just an hour outside of Sydney , they stand at over 2953ft (900m) and a 1640ft (500m) trail from the main Echo Point lookout platform leads to more lookouts and a bridge across to the first Sister. They were formed over 200 million years ago when volcanic lava pushed through sedimentary rock and transformed it into stone towers. However, the local legend of their formation is much more intriguing.
According to Aboriginal legend the sisters, Meehni, Wimlah and Gunnedoo, were members of the Katoomba tribe and lived in the Jamison Valley. All three sisters fell in love with three brothers from a neighboring tribe and wanted to marry them...something that was strictly forbidden by tribal law. The brothers were so determined to wed their beloveds that they started a war with the other tribe to overturn the ban on intermarriage. Fighting became so intense that a witch doctor in the sisters' tribe turned them to stone in order to protect them from the violence. His plan to turn them back into women when it was safe was thwarted when he himself was killed in battle. The sisters stayed immortalized in stone forever, never to be reunited with their lost loves.

A wonderfully unpretentious vineyard where Cheetos, overalls and bluegrass tunes – or fine cheese and great views – pair just fine with the wine.

The Three Incestuous Sisters is an evocative, illustrated book by the best-selling author of The Time Traveler's Wife , Audrey Niffenegger. Reminiscent of the gothic style of Edward Gorey, Niffenegger's visually stunning narrative affirms her genius as a storyteller. These rich pages present the tale of three very different sisters: one who is beautiful, one who is smart, and one who is talented. A melodrama of sibling rivalry unfurls as one sister is driven mad with jealousy due to the passionate love affair of another. Escalating to a dizzying climax, the romance of the two lovers ends in sabotage, shame, and despair. Haunting illustrations and lyrical prose depict a timeless tale of love, revenge, and ultimately, transcendence. The Three Incestuous Sisters is a unique and lavish tour de force, which showcases Audrey Niffenegger's incredible talent as an artist and a writer.
Niffenegger, author of the two-plus-million-copy bestseller The Time Traveler's Wife , showcases her artistic talent in an oversized "novel in pictures" she calls "the book of my heart, a fourteen-year labor of love." It's the strange and haunting story of three sisters who "lived together in a lonely house by the sea, near the lighthouse, miles away from the city." Blonde Bettine is the youngest and prettiest, redhead Clothilde is "the most talented" and blue-haired Ophile, the eldest, is considered the smartest. When lightning kills the lighthouse keeper, his son, Paris, arrives to take his place; Paris and Bettine quickly fall in love and conceive a child. Jealous Ophile misbehaves badly; psychic Clothilde communes with the unborn baby, whom she names the Saint; and Bettine and Paris run away to the city, where tragedy strikes. Niffenegger's spare, full-page, sepia-toned aquatints ("an idiosyncratic, antique" medium) are evocative and Gorey-esque; they tell the story more than the minimalist prose does. And Niffenegger's afterword is illuminating, both about the process of making aquatints and about her productive methods of procrastination: The Time Traveler's Wife , she reveals, "started its life as the project I played with when I should have been finishing Sisters ." *Starred Review* Niffenegger, author of the best-selling novel The Time Traveler's Wife (2003), is an accomplished artist as well as an imaginative writer, and she now presents a shivery fairy tale in the form of an eerily beautiful novel-in-pictures. The minimal yet spooky text faces dramatically nuanced full-page prints portraying three grown, orphaned sisters. Bettina, the youngest, is a lovely blond; Ophile, the unhappy eldest, has blue hair; Clothilde, in the middle and in a world of her own, is a redhead. The svelte sisters possess extravagantly long hair and tapering, expressive hands; wear clinging, gray, ankle-length dresses; and are as powerfully evocative as dancers in a Martha Graham production. They live harmoniously in "a lonely house by the sea" until the late lighthouse keeper's handsome son, Paris, appears and falls in love with Bettina, who soon becomes pregnant. Clothilde, whose esoteric talents include levitation, communes happily with her in utero nephew, while Ophile goes mad with jealousy. Niffenegger's grim yet erotic tale and stunningly moody gothic prints possess the sly subversion of Edward Gorey, the emotional valence of Edvard Munch, and her very own brilliant use of iconographic pattern, surprising perspective, and tensile line in the service of a delectable, otherworldly sensibility. From the moment I saw the cover of this book, I knew I had to have it. I don't know why. It just resonated with me in some odd way, that delicate rendering of three sisters in a bed. Maybe it's an archetypal thing. There's something about a group of three sisters that brings to mind three fates, three Norns, three Gorgons, three Weird Sisters on the heath. The mythic quality of *Sisters* continues throughout the story, with the sisters' idyll shattered by the arrival of a man named Paris who elicits jealousies and rivalries. He chooses the sister who is considered the prettiest. This leaves one sister bitter and bent on revenge, and the third woman bound strangely to the unborn child of the new couple. The story takes surreal twists and turns of various sorts, which I'll not spoil here. If you go into *Sisters* expecting a novel in the usual sense, several hundred pages of densely packed text, you will be disappointed. This is something else entirely. Read this book if you're interested in sublime and strange artwork, and in a story that is bare-bones but works on the level of archetype and myth. Essentially, this is like one of those richly illustrated fairy tale books you had when you were a kid, except it's for grown-ups. I'm going to treasure mine.

What a beautiful book. I am lucky to have a copy. It is 12.8 inches wide, 9.6 inches high, and 1 inch thick. 176 pages. Every other story page is a full-sized aquatint. The antique, idiosyncratic aquatint process is long and laborious, followed by painting watercolors onto each print. The author, after the success of her novel, The Time Traveler's Wife, wrote the story, made the aquatints, designed the book and set and printed the type. It took a year just to bind the books in leather. The entire process took fourteen years to make ten copies of the book. Unfortunately, mine is not one of those, but the beauty comes through, even after modern technology was invoked to make this widely available. The story is like a fable, full of wonders, and told in few words, but like a Russian novel in its complexity of drama. The glorious aquatints tell most of the story; the words fill in the gaps in our knowledge of events. I have to make sure this goes into someone's home when I die.

This beautiful book looks like a limited edition artist's book, which is what it was originally. It's filled with large format aquatints (a form of etching) which are gracefully drawn and colored. One can tell from the quality of the lines how much she loved doing this. The publisher did a great job of reproduction, so important in a book of this kind. You can literally cut out the illustrations, frame them, and hang them on your walls as fine art, they're that good. As an illustrated novelist myself I found this book to be inspiring. There is little text, but what there is is poetic and dreamlike, and tells a disturbing but haunting tale of sisterly love and jealousy. It's not a regular novel like her best-seller "The Time Traveler's Wife," which I also loved, but it tells its story mostly in pictures. I highly recommend this for lovers of book art.

I heard Audrey Niffenegger read from this book recently. She also showed some of the artwork. I was hooked and had to order it. I am delighted with the book. It is a dark, strange, and wonderful work of the imagination. Think Tim Burton if he had created an illustrated novel. Note that the text and the pictures work semi-independently of each other.

Beautiful book. Haunting story and illustrations by Niffenegger, who is the author of some really great books, like the Time Traveler's Wife. Who knew she could illustrate, too! This is a lovely coffee table book and conversation starter that will last for years.

So interesting...the author spent years putting the story and artwork together. I liked it so much I bought two (one for me and the other as a gift).

I wasn't sure what to expect. This book is hard to describe,as the author put it the meaning of the story you have to find out for yourself. The artwork is beautiful, the story is beautiful. A terrific book.

my thoughts so far...

I just received this book this morning. Ive got to admit I was surprised and disappointed at the fact that its a novel in pictures. I didnt feel this was made clear. However, having absolutely loved The Time Travelers Wife and Her Fearful Symmetry, I am declaring myself a fan!! I've opened the book and had a quick peek but am saving it for when Ive more time to appreciate it then. Ill give an honest rating then. I must point out that whilst I was initially disappointed Im now thoroughly looking forward to it. If its anywhere near as good as the others Ive read, Im in for a treat!! (please note that as I HAD to give a rating Ive put 3* for now, I shall amend this later) *added later* Ive got to say this is not my thing, I tried to enjoy and appreciate it for what it is but its just not for me. In fact it bored me. I cant give one star as apparently that means I hate it, this is a little strong, 2 stars it is :)
