Re:Nylon

Prada has always utilized nylon as its main material. The brand's debut in 1984 of Pocone in its collection of accessories and bags received worldwide praise. Miuccia Prada expanded the collection to include nylon dresses for her own label and Linea Rossa, the nylon-heavy, buzzbeast-ready diffusion range that Frank Ocean recently dressed himself in at the Met Gala. The Milan-based powerhouse has redesigned its iconic nylon bags into eco-friendly ReNylon fabrics. The new collection includes six classic designs that include a belt bag, shoulder bag, tote bag duffle bag and two backpacks -- in repurposed ECONYL fabric that is made from recycled plastics, fishing nets and textile fiber waste that is sourced globally.

The material that is recycled is the result of a collaboration with Aquafil, a Italian textile yarn maker that makes Econyl fabric made from regenerated nylon waste. This fabric can be recycled many times without losing its quality. It's part of an overall initiative to transition from virgin nylon to re:Nylon throughout the entire Prada portfolio in 2021, The Business of Fashion reports. In addition to the six Re:Nylon bags, the collection also includes a pair of boots and shoes constructed from repurposed ECONYL and a range of apparel in the same fabrication.

Prada and National Geographic produced a series "What We Carry", an online series that focuses on the innovative process used to create the Re:Nylon bags. The first video includes Harry Potter actress and environmentalist Bonnie Wright and National Geographic Explorer Asher Jay touring an Arizona carpet recycling facility that turns old nylon into repurposed ECONYL.

With the transition to re:Nylon, Prada is achieving its most significant reduction in the use of virgin nylon yet, resulting in the saving of 70,000 barrels of oil per year, The Business of Fashion reports. The move will also cut the carbon emissions of the company by about 57,000 tonnes. It's the latest sustainability effort from the brand which recently made it fur-free in its clothes and accessories, a move that was lauded by animal rights activists and environmentalists alike.

Recycled Nylon

Recycled nylon is not without its drawbacks. It's not biodegradable and can remain for a long time in landfills or the oceans until it breaks down into smaller pieces that could harm wildlife. The fabric can also shed microplastics after washing. It also consumes 50 percent less energy to make as compared to regular nylon and is more durable than other bags like cotton or wool.

The fabric is constructed from a combination of waste plastic and petroleum that is made by burning fossil fuels. prada nylon bag helps reduce the need for more natural resources and carbon emissions from production virgin nylon. It is also easier to handle than other bags because it doesn't have to be dyed or weaved. This makes it an ideal option for bags that will be used regularly for gym or yoga gear.

In addition to its environmental advantages recycled nylon is a more durable and more flexible material than polyester or cotton. It can also withstand the most severe abuse which makes it ideal for backpacks and outdoor gear. The material is also incredibly lightweight and can be easily cut and stitched to form the desired shape of bags. Nylon is a great choice for outdoor gear as it is water resistant and doesn't take in odors or mildew as easily as other fabrics.

If you are looking for bags that are sustainable, look for the Oeko-Tex Standard 100 Certification. This certification checks for chemical residue, as also social and environmental responsibility. This certification is a good indicator of brands that are transparent and accountable.

Patagonia, for example, offers a range of yoga equipment and backpacks that are made from recycled nylon, also known as Econyl. The nylon is created in a closed loop system which uses 50% less energy than virgin nylon. Additionally, the brand supports organizations that are working to save our planet.
