This week's sermon is about new beginnings, and specifically, about submissive women and alpha males. We'll begin by looking at a few biblical verses that speak to this topic.

Praying Woman

First, from 1 Corinthians 11:3-10, we read:

'But I want you to know that the head of every man is Christ, the head of woman is man, and the head of Christ is God. Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head, but every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head, since it is the same as if her head were shaven. For if a woman will not cover her head, then she should cut her hair short, but if it is disgraceful for a woman to have her hair cut or shaved off, then she should cover her head. A man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God, but woman is the glory of man. For man was not made from woman, but woman from man. Neither was man created for woman, but woman for man. That is why a wife ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels. Nevertheless, in the Lord woman is not independent of man nor man of woman; for as woman was made from man, so man is now born of woman. And all things are from God.'

This passage speaks to the idea of submission and authority, and specifically to the idea that women are to be submissive to men. We see that it is the man who is the head of the woman, and that the woman is to be subject to the man. This is not to say that women are inferior to men, but rather that they are to submit to the authority of men.

Next, we'll look at Ephesians 5:22-33, which says:

'Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, because we are members of his body. 'Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.' This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church. However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.'

Again, we see the idea of submission, this time with wives submitting to their husbands. We also see that husbands are to love their wives just as Christ loves the church. This is a beautiful picture of the relationship between husband and wife, and it is one that should be emulate.
